Located on California’s Pacific Coast just 20 miles south of San Francisco, visit the city of Montara, and you in will find yourself in the heart of the Golden State. A short drive south, and easily accessible is Silicon Valley, San Jose, and the Pacific Coast Highway.

As Part of San Mateo County, the early history of Montara is unclear, although it was certainly established as a town by the late nineteenth century. The name is thought to come from the Spanish for mountains, but there is little to substantiate this.

The most notable features here are Montara Point Lighthouse, built in 1875 and Montara Mountain which is part of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Book an RV in Montara, and you will be on your way to explore the beautiful, breathtaking Pacific Coast area while being just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of large cities.

Discover Montara

The Great Outdoors

As you drive a few miles in your motorhome rental from Montara, you arrive at Crystal Springs Reservoir. Formed from two artificial lakes, the reservoir runs along the rift valley caused by the San Andreas Fault. Although not open to the public, there are hiking trails around the reservoir for you to enjoy on a family outing.

Montara is situated on the very edge of the Rancho Corral de Tierra, an area of over 4,000 acres of undeveloped land. Responsibility for the area has been taken by Golden Gate National Recreation Area, in order to protect the miles of public trails and the landscape. It’s home to a very diverse wildlife, unique habitat, and four working farms. Park your camper rental from Montara and head out to take some amazing photographs.

Pedro Point Headlands Trail is a 2.4-mile loop with spectacular views over the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Peninsula shoreline. It’s graded as a moderate difficulty so don't forget to pack your best pair of hiking boots. The trail is also pet-friendly.

The Pacific Ocean coastline is rightly known for its beaches, and many are easily accessible from Montara. Half Moon Bay State Beach provides miles of fine sand spread over four separate beaches; Roosevelt, Dunes, Venice, and Francis Beaches. A campground is available so come on down with your Montara RV rental.

RV Parks

Pillar Point RV Park is located a very short drive from the city and a great place to park your Montara camper rental for a night or two. The park is located on the beach and next to a six-mile walking and biking trail. Full RV hookup sites are available along with WiFi, TV service and a restaurant. The park doesn’t take reservations and operates on a first come first served basis, so it’s advised to check in early!

A little further along the coast is Half Moon Bay RV Park. This campground offers the amenities of full hookup sites and free WiFi, but also a British-style pub! Featuring an English style of pub grub, 19 beers on tap and a very British welcome, it’s definitely worth considering.

To experience a more get away from it all feeling, the Portola Redwoods State Park could be just the place. With limited facilities, you’ll be back to basics, but staying in a living forest among the wildlife. Parking for the night here gives you fantastic access to the redwoods forest and the waterfalls, well away from the noise of nearby Silicon Valley.

Exploring the City

With its seaside location and traditional homes, a stroll around the pretty Montara town is well worth the effort. A good walk will also build up an appetite, and you won’t go hungry here. Along with standard American fare, you’ll find Mexican, Peruvian restaurants and even an airplane themed diner.

Animal lovers will surely want to visit Alpacas by the Sea. Here you are able to learn everything there is to know about Alpacas and even start your own herd! If that is going a bit far and not your cup of tea, then consider purchasing Alpaca products at the store as a souvenir instead.

Montara Point Lighthouse is a short walk along the coast. Established in 1875, the current lighthouse is a cast iron tower, erected in 1928. The keeper’s quarters were featured in the 2001 film Bandits, featuring Bruce Willis and Cate Blanchett, but has since been converted into a small hostel.

Should you find yourself in the area during October, consider visiting the annual Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival. Featuring the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, this festival began in 1971 attracting around 15,000 visitors. Anything pumpkin related you can think of, you’ll find it at the show!

Staying with the pumpkin theme, there are many stands along Highway 1, for your enjoyment. Arata’s Farm is one of the largest and oldest, established in 1932. The farm has grown into an attraction in its own right, with a hay maze, a petting zoo, pony rides and much more.

Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is another interesting place to visit with your Montara travel trailer. The micro-brewery offers craft beers, a tour of the facilities and tasting opportunities.

Should you be looking for California beach to enjoy, consider a motorhome rental in Montara. Watch a sunrise, sit by a campfire, and take in the spectacular landscape. Rent an RV in Montara and head out on a great outdoor adventure!
