Indigenous tribes once called Mount Pleasant home, until the arrival of the European settlers in 1680. The Revolutionary War and the Civil War both left their marks on the town of Mount Pleasant, evident by the large number of statues and memorials that dot the streets and public parks.

Mount Pleasant has certainly come a long way since its colonial heyday, blossoming into a charming port town surrounded by beautiful coastline and rivers. A fine balance of urbanized area and nature exists in and around Mount Pleasant due to the significance of the local ecosystem for a variety of wildlife. Cobblestone roads and elegant old plantation style houses are a hallmark of this southern gem, and the dining and shopping are excellent too.

The public parks in Mount Pleasant leave little to be desired, even if there are only a few. Shem Creek Park sits on the water of Charleston Harbor. This wonderful little waterfront park has several connecting boardwalks spanning the wetlands, offering unencumbered views of the ships coming in and out of the harbor. This park is great for fishing too. There are a few other sports complexes and outdoor walking areas in Mount Pleasant, like Patriot’s Point.

Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park is one of the best and biggest parks in town, with amazing views of the two rivers that separate Mount Pleasant and Charleston. The Ravenel Bridge spans the river above the park, where playgrounds, wide open grassy areas, and other fun features make the waterfront park a popular place to go. Laurel Hill County Park is located within Mount Pleasant but administered by Charleston County; hiking, biking, and running on the open trails are great ways to see the forested areas.

You don’t need to travel far outside of town in your Mount Pleasant RV rental to see some pretty neat stuff. Isle of Palms County Park is right across the waterway separating Mount Pleasant from Sullivan Island. Francis Marion National Forest is almost directly north of town, named for the infamous revolutionary fighter Francis Marion who played a pivotal role in defeating the British and gaining independence. Off-road motorcycling, ATV riding, and horseback riding are fun ways to travel through this impressive swath of coastal forest, where low lying wetlands, swamps, and old forests blend to provide lush scenery.

City Sightseeing

You can truly feel the gravity of the history in Mount Pleasant with every step you take along the cobblestone streets of Mount Pleasant’s historic old town. Lots of old buildings erected hundreds of years ago can still be seen and visited, like the Hibben House built in 1755 and the Pitt Street Pharmacy. The Charles Pinckney House is another wonderful architectural masterpiece, now serving as a museum recounting the evils of slavery. Boone Hall Plantation is worth visiting, if only for the pleasure of driving your Mount Pleasant RV rental through the massive avenue of oak trees that lead to the estate. This old plantation was the used for several film productions as a filming location due to its elegance and historical significance as a slavery plantation.

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, as well as the Patriots Point Cold War Submarine Memorial, are two of the best attractions in town, at one of the most beautiful locations on the harbor. The mighty USS Yorktown is permanently docked at Patriots Point serving as a living museum after being decommissioned from service. Fort Sumter National Monument is, of course, the primary place on most people’s list when arriving in the area because the first shots of the Civil War were fired at this military installation on an island in the harbor. The museum and guided tours given by park rangers offer a wealth of information to better understand the fort and its importance in one of the biggest wars in American history.

RV Parks to Visit
