The Great Outdoors

Just over an hour’s drive from Mount Vernon, North Cascades National Park features stunning glacial lakes, alpine hiking trails, and camping opportunities. Diablo Lake is a dammed reservoir on the Skagit River, known for its stunning turquoise water. While the 40-degree water is generally too cold for swimming, the lake is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. The North Cascades are also a winter playground, with opportunities to snowmobile, ski, and even dog sled.

Little Mountain Park boasts 11 miles of trails, with some specifically for hiking or mountain biking and some multi-use trails. The trails vary in difficulty level, and some offer viewpoints from which you can see much of western Skagit Valley and, on clear days, Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.

When you rent an RV in Mount Vernon, you will be only about a half hour's drive from the town of Anacortes. From there, you can easily catch a ferry to one of the San Juan Islands or book a whale watching cruise. You can also explore Washington Park, which has camping and day use areas, a boat launch, and a scenic loop drive with gorgeous views of Puget Sound.

Exploring the City

One of the biggest Pacific Northwest destination events of the year, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is held each year for the whole month of April. Millions of tulips in the valley bloom every spring, painting the fields with vibrant color. This event is a driving tour, so it’s a perfect activity to do with your RV rental near Mount Vernon. The Tulip Festival also includes street fairs, arts and craft shows, and a multi-week nightly salmon barbecue.

There are art sculptures scattered throughout the heart of downtown Mount Vernon, so explore the city and appreciate some beautiful art installations with a walking tour of the city. Some of the art is, of course, tulip-related, but you will also find sculptures, stained glass windows, and other types of art as well. These installations are supported by the Arts Commission, a dedicated group of volunteers.

For history buffs, Mount Vernon also has a driving tour of 55 historic barns. Many of these barns are still in use for cattle and dairy farming, and there’s an audio tour that guides you through the history of each one. Photographers can enter a photo contest specifically geared around these barns.

Mount Vernon is home to many delicious restaurants and craft breweries. The local cuisine features seafood, due to Mount Vernon’s proximity to Puget Sound, but you can also find world cuisine, steak houses, and pubs. The wealth of surrounding agriculture means you can find delicious, locally grown and farmed food items throughout the year.
