In southwestern Idaho, about 45 miles south of Boise, the city of Mountain Home has grown into one of the largest cities in the region. From its incredibly humble beginnings as a post office at a stagecoach stop, the city has blossomed into a city that is proud of its unique history and one that is proud of its natural surroundings. Situated near Snake River Canyon and with the Crater Rings not too far away, there are lots of scenic sites to explore. With so much to learn and so many places to see, choosing to book an RV in Mountain Home can offer the perfect escape for those looking to reconnect with nature.
You can park the Mountain Home RV rental and use the Treasure Valley Transit buses, which should be able to get you to all of the key points of town. Otherwise, driving your RV rental around can also be an option as the roads in Mountain Home are fairly wide and you shouldn’t have difficulty navigating the streets.
Once you’ve made the decision to secure an RV rental in Mountain Home, you’ll be amazed by all that you have readily available to explore. Whether you want to spend some time relaxing on the lake or go hiking up one of the surrounding mountains, Mountain Home offers access to it all.
If you have a particular interest in the large raptors and birds of prey that can be found in mountainous regions, then spend the afternoon at the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area. Just 65 miles west of Mountain Home near Murphy, this nature preserve is home to roughly 800 nesting raptors. While not the whole park is accessible to the public, you can still hike along one of the trails and keep your eyes on the skies to catch a glimpse of some of these magnificent creatures. With 10 different species commonly spotted in the park, you may see an agile red-tailed hawk, a clever turkey vulture, or maybe even an enormous golden eagle.
About 150 miles to the northeast of Mountain Home is the entrancing Sawtooth National Forest. Right in the middle of Idaho, here you’ll be able to hike along one of the countless trails that wind through the park. You’ll be mesmerized by the towering mountain views and the deep valleys filled with sapphire lakes. If you have some experience mountain climbing, you can work your way up some of these powerful geologic formations and get an unforgettable view of the Sawtooth Range or Boulder Range. If you’d rather partake in an activity a little less involved, or maybe you just want to take in all of your surroundings, you can unwind by the shores of Alturas Lake, Pettit Lake, Redfish Lake, or Stanley Lake.
If you’re willing to drive your Mountain Home motorhome rental a good distance, just over three hours north of town is Payette National Forest, near McCall. In the Idaho High Country, Payette National Forest is broken up by towering peaks that are nearly 9,500 feet high. At over 2.3 million acres, there are hundreds of miles of trails that you can explore. Maybe you’ll find a waterfall, or some bright wildflowers, and even some WWII plane wreckage. Regardless, the untamed Idahoan wilderness is enough to delight and inspire anyone who spends time in this wonderland. If you don’t want to make the journey back to town, there are plenty of campsites available in Payette for you to call home for a day or two.
After your day of exploring the Idahoan wilderness, you’re going to need to find a place to park your camper rental near Mountain Home.
On the outskirts of downtown, Mountain Home RV Park offers electrical hookups, showers, laundry facilities, WiFi, a swimming pool, and a basketball court.
Also right near downtown is Cottonwood RV Park. The park offers daily or monthly rates, hookups, showers and restrooms, laundry facilities, and there are plenty of restaurants nearby.
After taking in all of the natural wonders of southwestern Idaho, turn your Mountain Home RV rental by owner back to town and explore all that the city has to offer.
If you want to learn more about the area of Mountain Home, then spend some time at the Mountain Home Historical Museum. Housed in a building from 1908, the museum takes pride in its photography collection that depicts life in the area since the first settlers arrived. They also take care of local artifacts that depict both the physical history of the area, such as mining and railroad artifacts, as well as cultural artifacts from Native Americans and Basque communities. Not only that, but the Mountain Home Historical Museum maintains several historic buildings around town.
If you want to get a better understanding of the sheer power of nature, head just north of town to Crater Rings. You can see some deep volcanic craters, some of the only volcanic craters in the continental U.S.A. The largest of the craters measures 3,000 feet across and considering that these were likely lava lakes, you’ll breathe a sigh of relief upon hearing that these specific volcanoes are no longer active.
After your hiking and wildlife viewing, you’re going to need to refuel. Why not indulge in some hearty steak and potatoes from one of the heartiest states in the Union?
