Mountainhome, and the neighboring towns, Skytop, Cresco, Canadensis, and Buck Hill, are all so small and closely located together that most locals in the Pocono area simply refer to them as the Barretts because they collectively make up the Barrett Township. Although records about Mountainhome are spotty, this much is known: it has been in existence since at least 1859, which was when the Barrett township was officially formed, and there are mentions of Mountainhome in the formal documents.
A close-knit town with around 1,100 year-round residents, it’s the sort of community where everyone knows everyone, and the neighbor gossip willingly dishes out the dirt on the movers-and-shakers and scandalous teens in the neighborhood. And in spite of being a small town, there’s plenty of things to do and see in the area. Renting an RV in Mountainhome make it even easier to get around!
Want an outdoor adventure, but dread dealing with a leaky tent, bugs, and rocky, damp soil? An RV rental is an easy solution for these problems. The RV will, of course, allow you to explore the state forests, game lands, preserves, and other parks with ease without having to book hotels. Mountainhome is a great spot to start in. It’s neatly in between the Pocono region, which is a catchall term for the massive collection of parks, and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (also referred to as The Gap). The closest state park, Tobyhanna State Park, is an impressive 6,000 acres park with an almost 200-acre lake. The word, Tobyhanna comes from a Native American word that means “a stream whose banks are lined with alders.” Although this was heavily lumbered, there are still alders along the lake and the many creeks snaking through the park.
There are several miles of trails winding through Tobyhanna Park. A couple of trails, in particular are challenging due to they require hikers to leap from boulder to boulder, and there are no detours. Park management rents rowboats, small electric-motor boats, canoes and kayaks out to visitors between May and early September. Like many of the other larger parks, hunting and trapping are allowed -- though participants must obtain the appropriate permits and observe the regulations. Once used for target practice, vacationers should be aware that there is a remote chance they could encounter an unexploded artillery shell in the park. If you do find one, do not disturb it and notify the authorities.
The Gap, Paradise Preserve, and Big Pocono are all just a few minutes away, all with plenty of opportunities for adventure and outdoor fun in your rental RV.
When you book a travel trailer in Mountainhome, remember to find a campsite so that you can hit the sack. There are several private campgrounds in the area, all with different degrees of services. Mount Pocono Campground, for example, has 20, 30, and 50 amps hookups, free WiFi, and is dog-friendly.
On the other hand, Tobyhanna State Park, which permits RV/trailer camping, does not provide any electric hookups, and not all campsites have a dump station.
Mountainhome is one of those towns that seems like it hasn’t changed in decades. Many of the buildings are mid-century style, and peppering the streets, there are several homes and buildings that date back to the turn of the century. Mountainhome Bowling Center turns out the lights on Saturday nights and glows neon! The bowlers are kept hopping with strobe lights, a disco ball, and funky vintage music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Just down the street, there are a couple used bookstores with a selection of rare and unusual books, and a handful of antique shops where shoppers can find period-appropriate pieces with ease. Mid-century modern, Victorian, roarin’ 20s, and more.
Callie’s Candy Factory is favorite for both locals and vacationers. Many regular visitors make it a point to stop at Callie’s where she has created a huge variety of candy and pretzels since 1952. She specializes in covering unexpected food in chocolate ganache. Cheese, chips, licorice, and somehow, even cream cheese. Callie loves getting suggestions!
After you’ve grabbed some chocolate-covered candy, wrap up the adventures in your Mountainhome motorhome rental by visiting the local pub. The Pour House is a family-friendly restaurant/bar that has live music, an occasional karaoke night, and a selection of beer on tap that includes local craft beer and wines, and cocktails.
