Nestled in the glorious forest lands of northern California, Norden is an exciting destination to visit no matter the time of year. The community is named for Dr. Charles Van Norden, an executive that worked for the South Yuba Water Company. The town is noteworthy for being situated on the old Transcontinental Railroad, as well as the infamous settler road that brought countless pioneers to the promised lands of the West Coast.

Norden hardly has any permanent residents, with well under a hundred people living in town year-round. The area features hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters, making it a versatile wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts. This alpine retreat is known for its world-class skiing and snowboarding, intoxicating views, and majestic mountains. Reno and Carson City are not far from the small mountain town, and Lake Tahoe is just a short drive away in your Norden camper rental. Norden is conveniently located right off of Interstate 80, making it an exceptional place to rent an RV if you feel up for a road trip.

Discover Norden

The Great Outdoors

It is no secret that Northern California holds some of the most enchanting natural treasures in the entire country, and possibly the world. Stunning national parks and forests can be found seemingly around every corner, so it can be a bit of a challenge figuring out the best plan of attack when you book an RV in Norden. Donner Memorial State Park is perhaps the easiest choice to make as it is quite close to town. The park is named for the ill-fated Donner Party, a group of settlers who encountered tremendous hardships on their westward journey. There is lots of lake frontage to enjoy in the small state park, and some epic views too.

Burton Creek State Park is an excellent place to bring your Norden RV rental, especially if you want to catch a glimpse of Lake Tahoe. The park is full of unpaved wilderness trails, towering coniferous trees, and picturesque beaches. Hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing are all popular ways to explore the lakefront park. Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park is also found on the shores of Lake Tahoe, giving you yet another wonderful destination to bring your Norden motorhome rental. The forest in the park was once heavily logged but has since bounced back to become a lush wilderness packed with white firs, cottonwoods, lodgepole pines, and many other types of trees. Additionally, there is a nature center for valuable park information, plus miles of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails, and miles of lakeshore where you can swim or rest.

Tahoe National Forest surrounds the small town. The sprawling reserve shares a name with Lake Tahoe that is located within its boundaries. The forest is rife with old-growth groves, wild geological features, campgrounds, and several recreation areas. You can stay at any of the campgrounds in your Norden RV rental, or choose to check out one of the many other national parks and forests in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of eastern California.

Where to Park It

Tahoe National Forest, and the whole area surrounding Norden in general, is a convenient location to rent an RV, due to the sheer number of RV parks and campgrounds available. Coachland RV Park, for instance, has a general store, a large clubhouse, a playground, lawn games like croquet and bocce, and a one-acre pet park.

Truckee River RV Park is also an option, high up in the mountains with spacious, shaded campsites. You can whitewater raft, mountain bike, golf, or gamble while you stay, and resupply at the general store/deli on site.

There are several other campgrounds within a short drive, mostly within the Tahoe National Forest. Goose Meadow and Silver Creek Campground are just two of many available options in the giant forest.

City Attractions

It should not come as a surprise that a town of Norden's small size is not a nightlife hotspot full of attractions, but that shouldn’t detract prospective visitors. There might not be historic downtown areas, shopping plazas, stadiums, or art museums, but you can still find a few fun things to check out while you rent an RV in Norden. Chief among the points of interest in the area are the many ski and snowboard mountains that you can choose from all winter long. Boreal Mountain, Sugar Bowl Resort, Crystal Bowl, and Northstar Resort are all within a 20-minute drive of Norden, so it's no wonder that the town is a popular wintertime vacation spot.

Donner Memorial State Park has a wonderful monument that is great for pictures, and a nice museum for information on the region’s history. Both the Donner Summit Historical Museum and the Emigrant Trail Museum pay homage to the perilous trek that thousands of settlers once endured for the small glimmer of hope that they may someday reach fertile lands where achieving prosperity was a very real possibility.

KidZone Museum is a children-oriented museum where kids can play with one another, tour hands-on exhibits perfect for learning about the natural world or indulge in creativity workshops with painting and building.
