Settled by Welsh immigrants in the late 1600s, the town was named after North Wales in Wales. North Wales was an idyllic farming town with few residents until the North Pennsylvania Railroad laid down tracks and built a train stop in the mid-1800s. The town then grew around the railroad station quickly. Today, North Wales, PA is still a sleepy suburban town, and the streets are lined with Victorian and Tudor style homes.

The closest large town is Philadelphia, a little over 30 miles to the south. Allentown is roughly 35 miles to the north, and Reading, PA, (pronounced as “red-ding”) is a little over 45 miles west.

The Great Outdoors

Rent an RV in North Wales and gain access to a world of recreational fun and adventure! Evansburg State Park, which is a day-use park, is just minutes away. A former tract of farmlands, the Pennsylvania woods are quickly taking over the once-open fields. Go hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding and search for the lost remnants of the farms and mills that once dotted the region. You might get lucky and find some artifacts.

The largest piece of wilderness, French Creek State Park, Crow’s Nest Preserve, Hopewell Big Woods and the French Creek Game park together cover over nearly 80,000 acres of land. Hike, bike, ride a horse, and hunt (with appropriate permits) to your heart’s delight. There are over 150 miles of trails for you to explore, serpentining through mature woods and fresh meadows. Creeks snake through the park. Cast your rod and catch a trout or a bass.

To the north, Peace Valley Park offers a large (by Pennsylvania’s standards) lake, encompassing over 300 acres. The park itself is about 1,500 acres and provides several miles of trails for hiking and biking. There are sailboats and paddleboats available for rent, and if you have your own non-motorized boat, there is a public boat launch. In winters, ice skating and ice fishing are popular activities.

RV Parks

When you rent a motorhome in North Wales, you’ll need someplace to park and use as your home base for a few days while you explore the area. The Little Red Barn Campgrounds which is close to Nockamixon State Park, offers full hookups for your RV, a fire pit at each site, and is pet-friendly, so don't forget Ruffles.

Alternatively, Homestead Campground, which is set into the woods, provides a large playground, fishing pond, free WiFi, and a swimming pool for you to cool off after being out in the hot Pennsylvania sun.

Exploring the City

History buffs, take note: Even in the fringes of Philadelphia’s suburbs, there’s plenty of historic attractions in the area. The Pearl S. Buck Museum, where the author wrote the iconic, life-changing Good Earth and 255 other books, offers tours through the house. Learn about the Pulitzer-prize-winning author’s life and the legacy this woman left the world. Engage in discussions about marginalized communities, people of color, disabilities, and immigrants and ponder the implications. Most tours are held in early afternoons; check online or call for the schedule.

Experience life as a colonial-era farmer at Peter Wentz Farmstead and answer questions like: What hardships did they endure? How did they tame the dense woods using the primitive technologies of the time? The farmhouse, which once served as General Washington’s headquarters, has been restored to its American Revolution state, complete with authentic tools and clothes. The farmstead also offers hands-on activities, demonstrating the process of making craft goods in that time, such as weaving a new cloak or feeding the livestock.

Continue your immersion into America’s history by venturing down into the heart of Philadelphia: the Independence Hall, Franklin Institute, and National Constitution Center. Wander the Franklin Court’s streets, which are lined with the very same rowhouses that stood three hundred years ago, where venerable, key founding fathers of this nation once lived.

Sprint up the “Rocky steps," which lead up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and shadowbox in triumph. Enter the Museum to study many distinguished artists’ works lining the galleries, including Diego Rivera, Claude Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh.

Hop into your North Wales motorhome rental and tour the neighboring towns. Several have homes that date back to the 17th century, many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Wrap up a long day of sightseeing and adventuring by hitting one of the local breweries or wineries. The Boyd’s Cardinal Hollow is minutes away from North Wales and offers both traditional and experimental wines, such as jalapeno and agave wines.

Whether you’re a history buff or a nature lover (or both), consider a camper rental in North Wales. Explore the museums, run the "Rocky Steps," and enjoy the wonderful scenery. Rent a RV in North Wales, PA and go explore Pennsylvania!
