Quakers who were seeking religious freedom left Ireland in 1681 and sailed across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean and eventually settled in what would become known as Oaklyn, New Jersey. The original settlement was known as Newton Colony as the leader of this group of settlers, William Bates, purchased 250 acres from local Native Americans. The colony grew rapidly as the land was cleared for farming. As the years passed and moved into the 19th century, many of the farms were divided into lots, and it was originally called “Oakland the Beautiful,” but the name was changed to Oaklyn to avoid confusing it with another New Jersey town of Oakland. When you book an RV in Camden County, you will have plenty of history surrounding you and wonderful opportunities for city exploration in Philadelphia and Camden as well as outdoor wonders throughout New Jersey and along the Atlantic coastline.

You can head southeast and visit Wharton State Forest near Shamong or even a bit farther than that and check out Bass River State Forest near Beach Haven. If you prefer, you can check out Valley Forge National Historical Park near King of Prussia in Pennsylvania. This is the site where General George Washington spent the winter of 1777 and 1778 with his troops, having been chased by the British for almost a year out of Yorktown, New York. If you’re willing to take a bit of a drive, you can check out Elk Neck State Park near Elkton, Maryland and enjoy some water activities where the Elk River, Bohemia River, and North East River converge.
