In the center of Washington state, Okanogan is a village on the Okanogan River in Okanogan County. The name Okanogan derives from the native Salish word for meeting point or rendezvous. Okanogan is located about halfway between Spokane and Seattle, far removed from the densely populated cities found in the other corners of the state. That being said, Okanogan exists on the fringes of one of the state’s largest native reservations.
When you book an RV in Okanogan, you can cruise through the high desert, hike through forests, and climb some of the Cascade Mountains' highest peaks. This small but charming town has little more than the basic services and necessities, but it serves more than admirably as a jumping off point to discover the magic of Washington, especially when you want to rent an RV.
Setting off to explore the great state of Washington is one of the greatest pleasures when you rent an RV in Okanogan. Although the middle of Washington is quite different compared to the shorelines and coastal areas near Seattle, it is just as beautiful. There are plenty of different wildlife refuges and state parks to visit in the area, like Bridgeport State Park located on the banks of the Columbia River to the south. This diverse park can be used in a variety of ways, from swimming and sunbathing to hiking, golfing, boating, and fishing. There is a small waterfront campground that is ideal for you and your Okanogan RV rental.
You can also make your way towards Steamboat Rock State Park, named after the giant basalt butte feature that rises over 800 feet above the lake. The park is open year-round and is available for hiking, biking, horseback riding, boating, waterskiing, fishing, and swimming. In the wintertime, you can go cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or ice fishing. Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park is not far from Steamboat Rock and also has towering basalt geological formations and stunning viewpoints high above the water. Dry Falls refers to an ancient waterfall, which was once ten times bigger than Niagara Falls, that dried up after the Missoula Floods. There are rocky trails that you can hike and bike, and a vast lake you where you can kayak, swim, or fish. The park even has an interpretive center where you can learn about the complex geology that helped form the interesting landscapes featured in the area.
There are some pretty fantastic national parks you can visit during your Okanogan motorhome rental vacation, but the closest park to Okanogan is North Cascades National Park over on the United States’ border with Canada.
Like most places in Washington, Okanogan is no stranger to outdoor recreation or camping. Several nearby campgrounds can be utilized when in town, like Sunset Lakes Ranch. Sunset Lakes Ranch has spacious campsites, peaceful scenery, and a large lake that is ideal for fishing and boating.
Liar’s Cove Resort is also a great place to go fishing and offers rental boats on-site. The resort is home to rental cabins, fish cleaning stations, docks, swimming areas, a pet park, and a gift shop for souvenirs.
Margie’s RV Park is a comfortable and cozy place to stay, with daily, weekly, and monthly options. Tent camping and RV camping are both offered, and the park is within walking distance of local casinos, stores, and restaurants.
This charming town may be tiny, but it has lots of small-town comforts to make you feel at home during your trip. Lots of lovely restaurants and shops line the main street's downtown area, and there are some fantastic farmers' markets you can check out if you want to buy some fresh foods for your camping trip. At times, you can enjoy live music here too. The Okanogan County Fair Grounds are also located in Okanogan, the site of the Okanogan County Fair each year.
The Bodie Ghost Town is a popular attraction on the edge of Okanogan, with old historic structures dating back well over a century. This once prosperous mining town had several saloons, brothels, general stores, homes, churches, and other important buildings, before being abandoned after the mines ran dry. Now you can see an eerily preserved town stuck in time, adequately demonstrating what life was like on the frontier during the heyday of the Old West.
A casino is located just north of town and is known for its bevy of entertainment options. A massive gaming floor, poker tournaments, slot machines, live music and comedy shows, elegant dining, pools, spas, and much more await you and your Okanogan camper rental when you drop by for a quick visit or a multi-day stay.
