Established as the Town of Orange Court House in the 18th century, Orange lies in Virginia’s Piedmont region between Charlottesville and Washington, D.C. It held strategic importance during the American Civil War, with the Rapidan River to the north of town acting as the northern border of the Confederacy between 1862 and 1864.

Today, Orange is clustered with buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places while being a short drive from fishing rivers, hiking trails, and battlefield parks. Its proximity to Charlottesville and family-friendly campgrounds make it a great place to rent an RV while exploring everything Orange County has to offer.

Discover Orange

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Orange and drive west towards Stanardsville to the Rapidan Wildlife Management Area, which lies along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s renowned as a fishing destination, with healthy populations of brook trout inhabiting the Rapidan and Conway Rivers and their tributaries. Hunting for deer, turkey, and ruffed grouse is also permitted, with a diverse habitat that includes rugged mountains, mature hardwood forests, and moist hollows.

The Rapidan Wildlife Management Area lies adjacent to the Shenandoah National Park, which is traversed by more than 500 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails. Follow one of the short trails that lead to cascading waterfalls or challenge yourself along a section of the long-distance Appalachian Trail. If you’re after a more leisurely experience, you can enjoy a scenic journey along the 105-mile-long Skyline Drive, which features 75 lookout points overlooking the magnificent Shenandoah Valley.

If you’re interested in Virginia’s Civil War history, head to the Wilderness Battlefield where one of the first battles of the 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign took place. Stop in at the Chancellorsville Visitor Center to browse the museum exhibits detailing the historic battle, then follow the driving tour to visit Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters near Ellwood Manor. The route continues to Saunders Field where the Battle of Wilderness began on May 5 and continues down the Confederate line, with numerous walking trails where you can explore at your leisure.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Orange and make the short drive south to the Small Country Campground, a family-friendly RV destination overlooking its own lake. Select between their full hookup and partial hookup RV sites, then take advantage of the outdoor swimming pool, mini-golf course, and children’s playground.

Also nearby is the Christopher Run Campground, another lakeside option with spacious, full hookup RV sites in a wooded setting. There’s a recreation hall, children’s playground, and fishing piers that you can utilize, as well as a mini-golf course and on-site camping store.

Alternatively, drive northwest to the Shenandoah Hills Campground, which offers 67 RV sites in a forested setting. There are water and electric or full hookup sites, together with a swimming pool, jumping pillow, and catch-and-release fishing in their on-site pond.

Or, you can make the 30-minute drive to Locust Grove and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Orange and head to the James Madison Museum of Orange County Heritage to learn about the life and work of the fourth president of the United States. Browse the original furnishings, portraits, and personal items on display, together with a large collection of antique farm tools that reflect Madison’s reputation as a skilled farmer. After exploring the beautifully restored residence, you can grab a bite to eat at the Exchange Cafe or browse the gifts on sale at the Museum Shop.

Orange makes a good base for visiting the historic city of Charlottesville, which lies around 40 minutes’ drive to the southwest. Aside from being home of the Thomas Jefferson-designed University of Virginia, it’s also the site of Jefferson’s former plantation, Monticello, where you can tour his Neoclassical residence and the rebuilt slave quarters.
