Experience the Sites and Scenery

This part of the Midwest is filled with Mormon history, as this group of people fled persecution to find their home of Salt Lake City. Sites along the Mormon Pioneer National Historical Trail are a way for you to get to know the route traveled by more than 70,000 Mormon practitioners between the years of 1856 to 1869. Starting in historic Nauvoo, Illinois, all the way across the state of Iowa, the trail follows various highways across the state.

A favorite spot for locals and visitors alike is the Lake Orient Recreation Area, just one mile west of Orient on Highway 25. Fishing is a favorite activity here and the park also has picnic areas, shelters, a playground, and a disc golf course. Take a stroll on the walking trail near the lake shore, and make sure to visit the memorial to Orient native son, and former Vice President, Henry A. Wallace.

A few miles south of Orient is Green Valley State Park, with a large fishing lake and well-maintained trails. In the other direction, art lovers really appreciate the Des Moines Art Center. This is an art museum and learning center that focuses on modern and contemporary works, with artistry by Picasso, Hopper, O'Keeffe and Grant Wood. The building and grounds are beautiful, including a lovely rose garden and sculpture park behind the center. Make sure to check out the super interesting and fun gift shop.

Some of the prettiest botanical gardens you’ll ever see are in Des Moines at the Des Moines Botanical Gardens, located on the east bank of the Des Moines River. Also check out the Des Moines Blank Park Zoo, the Science Center of Iowa, and the Living History Farms.

Right in Orient, you’ll find the charming Henry A. Wallace Country Life Center, the birthplace home and farm of former Vice President Henry A. Wallace (1941-1945 under Franklin D. Roosevelt). This interesting and ahead-of-his-time public servant also served as the Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of Agriculture. The farm includes 40 acres of the original homestead, active fruit and vegetable gardens, restored prairie lands, outdoor sculptures, and a lovely restaurant.
