Situated part way between Dallas and Houston, Palestine is a small city and the seat of Anderson County. It was established as a trading post back in 1843 and flourished with the arrival of the railroad during the 1870s, with convict labor used to extend it to the iron smelter at the Rusk Penitentiary.

Today, Palestine is a charming city clustered around a lively main street and dotted with heritage-listed buildings. It features more than 1,800 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being located at one end of the vintage Texas State Railroad. With numerous RV parks on its doorstep and plenty of recreational reserves, it’s a great place to rent an RV while exploring East Texas.

Discover Palestine

The Great Outdoors

Book a camper rental in Palestine and make the short drive west to the Big Lake Bottom Wildlife Management Area, which is fed by the waters of the Trinity River. It was created to protect a tract of rapidly disappearing bottomland hardwood in the Post Oak Savannah Ecoregion of Texas. It’s a popular area for hiking and birding to spot the myriad species that come to rest and refuel in the wetlands, as well as hunting by both archery and gun for white-tailed deer, squirrels, and rabbits.

Continue driving west, and you’ll arrive at the Fairfield Lake State Park, which encompasses a large dam that was created in the 1960s for the nearby Big Brown Power Plant. Numerous nature trails explore the oak and elm forests, and there’s good birding thanks to the waterfowl and bald eagles that frequent the park. Fishing for largemouth bass and catfish is also popular while there are children’s playgrounds and picnic sites for those wanting a purely leisurely outing.

To the southeast of Palestine sprawls the Davy Crockett National Forest, which encompasses more than 160,000 acres of East Texas woodlands, streams, and wildlife habitat. It was named for the legendary pioneer and includes the popular Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area where you’ll find a swimming beach, a fishing pier, and an interpretive nature trail. If you want a more challenging trek, you can embark on the 20-mile-long Four C National Recreation Trail that winds through a diversity of habitats before reaching the impressive Neches Bluff Overlook.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Palestine and head to the Palestine RV Park, which has 27 sites with full hookup amenities. Select between their 20, 30 and 50-amp power outlets, then enjoy the communal atmosphere, with a picnic area and fire pit where you can mingle with other guests.

A short drive southwest of the city center you’ll find the Dogwood RV Park, with both drive-throughs and back-in lots offering 30 or 50-amp service. There’s a laundry facility with a washer and dryer available, as well as a dumpster for clearing out the trash.

Drive in the other direction, and you’ll arrive at the Highway 155 RV Park, a family-owned and operated campground for both short-term and long-term stays. There’s a recreation hall available to rent on-site and a modern laundry room, all overlooking a picturesque pond with resident ducks.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Palestine and head to the Museum For East Texas Culture, which overlooks Reagan Park on the edge of the downtown area. It occupies an impressive Tudor-Gothic building that was constructed in 1915 as the Palestine High School and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The museum details the people and events that have shaped Anderson County, including the history of its fire departments, railroads, and Native American communities.

A short walk north takes you to the Howard House Museum, which was built in 1848 for a Texas State Supreme Court Justice. James Bunda was the architect behind its initial design, with the kitchen and enclosed porch added later. Admire its whitewashed Greek Revival-style exterior, then step inside to explore the rooms that have been furnished as they would have appeared during the 19th century.

Delve into the local railroad history at the Palestine Depot, a Victorian landmark that’s home to the Whistle Stop Cafe and the Roundhouse 1909 boutique. It’s also the starting point for the Texas State Railroad’s scenic train trip, which takes you on a picturesque journey through the Piney Woods on a turn-of-the-19th-century steam train. Learn about the railroad’s construction by inmates from the nearby Rusk Penitentiary, with the trip ending at the beautiful rock structure of the Rusk Train Depot.

Palestine is home to numerous supermarkets where you can grab supplies, together with a good selection of restaurants and cafes for dining out. There are also gas stations if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Palestine.

Whether you’re visiting Anderson County for its historic railway or recreational reserves, book an RV in Palestine and start planning your East Texas adventure.
