Palmetto is a smaller city in Manatee County, Florida and was named after the palmetto trees that originally stood near the town's initial site. It was incorporated in 1897 and moved its town center from the waterfront to the train station in 1902, after the railroad had arrived. The area around Palmetto was first settled in 1842, the first two arrivals being Joseph and Hector Braden from Northern Florida. Their intention was to build a sugar plantation but Hector was drowned during a hurricane, when he tried to cross the Manatee River on horseback. Joseph continued on and built their sugar plantation and later built Braden Castle, which would eventually become a popular tourist attraction. Sugar is an important industry in Manatee County and there were several plantations dedicated to it. Start your vacation with a self-guided tour of the area in your Palmetto travel trailer rental; don't forget to take photos to show everyone back home.
When Manatee County was originally created in 1855, Charlotte County, Desoto County, Glades County, Hardee County, Highlands County, Sarasota County and Lee County were all of a part of Manatee but were later divided into these smaller communities.
Book an RV in Palmetto and you are all set to see and learn about this natural and unspoiled area. Other nearby cities worth checking out are Clearwater, Tampa, Brandon, Arcadia, and Sarasota, and your Palmetto camper rental is the perfect vehicle to ferry you to these destinations.
Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve is a huge protected wetland with thriving habitats ranging from seagrass to mangroves and salt marshes. Oyster bars and clam beds are additional occupants of the preserve. The earliest signs of human occupation of this area extend back to 8,000 B.C. and European explorers discovered the area in the 16th century.
Lake Manatee Lower Watershed is the recipient of water from the Braden and Manatee Rivers. It is downriver from the Ward Lake and Lake Manatee reservoirs, which provide potable water for the city of Bradenton (Ward Lake) and Manatee County (Lake Manatee). There is an extensive variety of wildlife and bird species that can be seen in the area. The Manatee River Estuary is a managed area that is host to a large commercial fishing industry. Your Palmetto RV trailer rental is the perfect blind to observe the wildlife without being seen.
Lake Manatee State Park is a freshwater waterfront park where visitors can go boating, fishing, and camping. The park is open daily, all year round, and anglers can fish from boats (there is a boat ramp for launching rowboats or powered boats, canoes, and kayaks) or from a dock. Powered boat engines must not be bigger than 20 horsepower. Swimming is also allowed but there are no lifeguards so swimmers do so at their own risk. Pine flatwoods, sandy pine scrub, depression marshes and hardwood forest make up the terrain, and provide a wondrous backdrop for hikers and campers, who will find camping spots near the lakeshore.
Fiesta Grove RV Resort is a large RV campground with restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, a swimming pool, social activities and wireless internet. The sites have concrete pads with full hookups (30 and 50 amp outlets). It is open year round.
Lone Oak Park is an older smallish RV resort with restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, a pet area and recreation room. It is within walking distance of shopping and a short drive from an outlet mall. There is shopping close by. Sites have full hookups, concrete pads with picnic tables and some shade; some sites are pull through. The park is pet and child-friendly, but it is a 55+ park; some homesites are rented long term but the RV sites can be rented by the day, week, month or longer.
There is a lot to see and do in Palmetto, starting with nature preserves and a historical park, and continuing with a convention center and agricultural museum. The museum has displays covering the type of agriculture that was conducted (citrus, dairy, vegetables, and cattle ranching), the types of equipment used, and regularly scheduled special events. There are boat tours (for sightseeing) and fishing charters, scuba diving and snorkeling guided tours, game and entertainment centers (batting cages and go-karts), and more. Those who wish to move slower and take in the ambiance can go golfing (there are several local courses), do some shopping or visit a craft brewery to see what is on tap (the choices may surprise and delight you). This is Florida, so it is no surprise that the culinary scene is extensive and wonderful. Much of the local cuisine consists of seafood, with a few more mainstream entries vying for attention, but if there is anywhere to try seafood, this is the place. Other cuisines on hand include Mexican, Greek, Mediterranean and Italian, German, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai, steakhouses, pizzerias, pub and bar restaurants, bistros, cafes and diners, and more. Prices are reasonable, so there is no guilt in eating out every night if that is your desire.
If it isn't, do some quick shopping and head back to your Palmetto motorhome rental to throw together a quick and simple home-cooked meal. Bring out the lawn chairs and enjoy your repast in the warm evening breeze, watching the sun go down and the stars come out. And, enjoy.
