Peru is the county seat of Miami County, Indiana and was established in 1834. It was developed from a section of the town of Miamisport and quickly became the more influential of the two communities while Miamisport faded into history. The town has had several historical events of importance. In 1913, the town experienced a flood that destroyed everything in its path. The year of 1933 saw John Dillinger's gang rob the Peru Police Department armory, making off with guns and bulletproof vests. Peru is home to the International Circus Hall of Fame and has been the winter host at various times to numerous famous circuses such as the Ringling Brothers. It is the annual host of the Peru Amateur Circus, held in July and featuring amateurs from the ages of seven to 21.

Book an RV in Miami County, and you are ready to begin exploring this unique area and culture. There are other towns you should visit while you're here (two birds with one stone). Rochester is located near Lake Manitou, a quiet calm lake and popular destination for fishing and boating. Wabash is host to a root beer stand that still offers car-side service. Marion was home to actor James Dean and cartoonist Jim Davis (both were born here). Kokomo was nicknamed “The City of Firsts” due to a number of technical and engineering discoveries that took place and were further developed there. Logansport is host to Riverside Park which has a refurbished Dentzel Carousel. Experience this region in style and comfort with a travel trailer rental from Peru.

The Great Outdoors

Tippecanoe River State Park is a popular destination for hiking and horseback riding; there are miles of trails, some of which are restricted to hiking only. Visitors can wander through the forests and alongside streams; a 90-foot fire tower, built in the 1930s, offers guests an unrestricted view of the surrounding area. The trails are rated from easy to moderate in difficulty. Guests can also canoe or kayak the park river and can rent the canoes or kayaks locally. Bird, wildlife, and nature watching can also be done here, from the trails or the water.

Salamonie River State Forest was created in order to reverse the erosion of topsoil that was adversely affecting the vegetation and plant life; a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp was created in the mid-1930s to aid in reforesting and restoring the ecosystem. The CCC also built Hominy Ridge Lake and a large stone shelter house that is situated near the lake. The park has a beach for swimming on Salamonie Lake while those more inclined to fishing can use a boat launch on the east side of Hominy Ridge Lake; fish species include largemouth bass and catfish. Boat motors are restricted to electric motors. Hunting is also allowed in season, as is hiking and horseback riding. Hikers and horseback riders should wear bright orange vests during hunting season.

Miami State Recreation Area is one of three outdoor recreation areas on Mississinewa Lake where guests can go swimming, boating, fishing, and hunting. The lake is a flood-controlled reservoir surrounded by forests, open prairie, and farmland. Visitors can additionally go waterskiing on the lake, enjoy the basketball and volleyball courts, and horseshoe pitch. There are two fishing piers, a fish cleaning station, and a frisbee golf course. Hikers can enjoy the many miles of trails that encircle the lake and wind through the landscape. Park your Peru RV rental nearby, and you can use it as a viewing blind while enjoying its creature comforts.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds in the area surrounding Peru, and some of them may have mobile homes or long-term guests. Your Peru camper rental is all you will need to have a relaxing vacation no matter where you decide to stay.

Honey Bear Hollow Family Campground is a rustic RV park nestled amongst a thin stand of trees. The internal roads are leveled dirt/gravel, and there is plenty of lawn surface. The park has a dump station, store, and laundry facility. On-site activities include a swimming pool and horseshoe pitch, hay rides, a frisbee golf course, and more.

Exploring The City

A good place to begin your adventure is with the museums; there are several in the city, and one of them is dedicated to the American Huey helicopter and memorabilia from the Vietnam War. It is staffed by volunteers; visitors may have a chance to go for a ride in the helicopters which have been refurbished. There is an air museum that is a tribute to the Grissom AFB and the men and women of the armed forces; it has tours, exhibits, and flight simulators. Another museum focuses on the history of Miami County, with archeological artifacts, circus relics, and a 1955 Fleetwood Cadillac that once belonged to composer Cole Porter, who was born in Peru. Be sure and take your Peru motorhome rental for a spin while you can, it's one of the unique perks of an RV vacation.

When dinner time rolls around, Peru has a long list of restaurants to choose from. There is nothing more American than an all-day breakfast, and one local diner, open for breakfast and lunch, does exactly this. They have an extensive menu, a Sunday brunch, and a great cup of coffee to top it off. The atmosphere is simple but nice, and the service is friendly. Those who don't want to dine in can order takeout and head back to their luxury RV rental in Peru to enjoy their meal under an open Indiana sky.
