Named after the grove of pines that surround the town, Pine Grove is a borough in Pennsylvania’s Schuylkill County. It was originally settled by German migrants exploring the Swatara Creek and officially incorporated in 1832 before becoming an important transportation hub of the Union Canal.

Today, Pine Grove is a laid-back destination to rent an RV while trekking parts of the Appalachian Trail or discovering the rich history of eastern Pennsylvania. It’s within easy access of family-friendly RV parks and scenic reserves, as well as the renowned Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.

Discover Pine Grove

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Pine Grove and make the short drive south to the Swatara State Park, which sprawls across more than 3,000 acres of rolling fields and woodlands between the Second and Blue Mountains. It encompasses the scenic Swatara Creek that can be explored by canoe or kayak, as well as part of the Appalachian Trail that passes through the southern end of the park. It’s also home to the 10-mile-long Swatara Rail Trail that includes remains of the Union Canal and the Lebanon–Tremont Branch of the Reading Railroad.

Bird lovers shouldn’t miss a visit to the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary to spot hawks, eagles, and falcons along the Appalachian Flyway. Aside from being a research hub and conservation training site, it functions as a learning center for the public, with numerous trails to explore. A highlight is the Lookout Trail that takes in raptor viewing sites along a ridge of Hawk Mountain and the opportunity to spot these magnificent birds in their natural habitat.

If you’re a keen angler, head to the Locust Lake State Park, which centers around a 52-acre lake that’s home to bass, pickerel, and panfish. Both motorized and non-motorized watercraft are allowed on the lake, and there are a number of designated swimming areas where you can take a dip. Stretch your legs along one of the hiking trails that surround the shores or try your luck at luring brown and brook trout that are regularly stocked throughout the year.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Pine Grove and head to the Twin Grove RV Resort & Cottages, which is home to a range of full hookups with 50 amp service. There are two pools with waterslides, a mini-golf course, and a fitness center, as well as recreational courts and an on-site restaurant if you want to dine in.

If you’re traveling with a big rig, book a spot at the Jonestown / Hershey NE KOA Journey that has level pull-throughs and full hookup sites. You can swim, fish, or canoe in the adjacent Swatara Creek or hit the miles of hiking and biking trails in the surrounding Swatara State Park.

Alternatively, head east to Shartlesville and the Appalachian RV Campground that has spacious sites with full hookups, a swimming pool, and an on-site restaurant. Or pull into the Mountain Springs Camping Resort, which features more than 290 RV sites that range from fully-shaded back-ins to pull-throughs.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Pine Grove and head out to explore the Pine Grove Historic District on foot. It includes 233 buildings, most of which are two-story residences that date from the 19th and early-20th centuries, as well as numerous commercial complexes, charming buildings, and a heritage-listed school. After wandering through the streets of Pine Grove, relax in Canal Park - a restored portion of the Union Canal that existed in southeastern Pennsylvania during the 19th century.

If you’re interested in the railroad history of the region, make the short drive south to explore historic Hamburg. Stop in at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum where you can view a short video detailing the history of the Reading Railroad before getting up close to a variety of rolling stock. Step inside the recreated 1930s Station Agent’s Office that’s decorated with vintage artifacts and admire the meticulously created model train that’s on display.

You can combine your visit to Hamburg with an exploration of the spectacular Crystal Cave in nearby Kutztown. Aside from guided tours to view the crystalline formations of the cave, the attraction also features the Crystal Cave Theater where you can learn about the geology of caves. Try your luck at panning for gemstones or challenge the family to a game of miniature golf, then grab a bite to eat or an ice cream at the on-site restaurant.

Pine Grove is home to a couple of supermarkets where you can stock up on groceries and has a good selection of eateries and restaurants. There are also a couple of gas stations if you want to fill up your camper rental in Pine Grove or you can make the 30-minute drive into Lebanon where there’s a more extensive choice of services.

Whether you’re visiting Schuylkill County for its fishing lakes or heritage-listed architecture, book an RV in Pine Grove and start exploring.
