Named for pioneer and rancher David Polson, the small lakeside town of Polson is a lovely place to rent an RV in northern Montana. This idyllic community is nestled up against the southern shores of Flathead Lake, one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the country. The town is picturesque, with splendid homes and buildings dotting the hills overlooking the lake. Above the town, you can feel the looming presence of the mighty Rocky Mountains over in the nearby Flathead National Forest.

When you book an RV in Polson, you can head just about anywhere in any direction and stumble upon something exciting. Polson is ideally located between Kalispell and Missoula, so you can always opt to travel to one of Polson’s larger neighbors for a break from camping. That being said, you will find yourself in one of the most stunning places on Earth, with majestic mountain ranges, stoic lakes, and nearby national parks to keep you happy and occupied.

Discover Polson

The Great Outdoors

The dizzying array of special places you can visit with your Polson RV rental will absolutely have your head spinning once you arrive in town. Few places in the United States are as breathtaking as the remote Montana wilderness. There is lots to do there on the park’s trails winding through meadows of wildflowers and thick forest groves. There are a few state parks situated on the shores of Flathead Lake that are worth checking out before you head farther from town, like Big Arm/Flathead Lake State Park. The small campground inside the park is a lovely place to camp in your Polson motorhome rental, with deluxe views of the lake. You can go fishing, swimming, boating, and waterskiing on the lake, or read a good book on the beach.

Wayfarers/Flathead State Park is another state park on the far side of Flathead Lake, placing a premium on its native plant life. In 1998, the Harry Horn Native Plant Garden was planted to preserve and protect endemic plant life. There is a campground where you can park the Polson travel trailer rental, hiking trails, biking areas, and lots of space for boating, fishing, and swimming in the lake.

You definitely cannot omit Flathead National Forest from your adventures, as it practically surrounds both Polson and Flathead Lake. The forest covers an astonishing two and a half million acres, making it larger than some states. There are thousands of miles of dirt roads and hiking trails scattered throughout the many wilderness areas of Flathead National Forest. Flathead National Forest is even more impressive when you realize that it is situated right next to Glacier National Park, a 1,600-square-mile paradise covering two mountain ranges, hundreds of lakes, and 30 active glaciers dating back before recorded history. This stunning park attracts three million people a year, and when you take a trip there, you will see why within minutes of arriving.

RV Parks

RV parks are never difficult to find in a place like Montana, and Polson is no exception. This outdoor-friendly city by the lake has a few campgrounds within minutes of its downtown, and many more beyond its city limits. Eagle Nest RV Resort is located in town, with lots of reasons to stay, including a refreshing pool, a spa, a playground, a clubhouse with a camp store, and sports courts.

Polson/Flathead Lake KOA features great views of the lake. Here you can play mini-golf, walk your pet in the dog park, take a dip in the pool, or lounge in the hot tub.

Montana Motorcoach Park is right on the water, with enchanting views and so much to do. There are storage areas, fenced in dog park areas, sandy beaches, and a well-kept fitness center among other things.

City Sightseeing

Aside from walking along the shores of Flathead Lake in the scenic village of Polson, there are a couple of other fun things to check off your list when you rent an RV in town. There are pleasant restaurants, breweries, art galleries, and locally owned shops on the hills above the lake, and walking through town is a peaceful experience. The Miracle of America Museum is one of the town’s best places to learn about the past, with over 40 different buildings depicting different time periods and scenes from the past. This kid-friendly museum has interactive exhibits and informative tours teaching guests the history of Polson and the frontier lands.

The Polson-Flathead Historical Museum is another place you can stop by on a rainy day. The museum features an impressive collection of antiques and artifacts that together weave a tapestry of history. Old roll-top desks, ornate wooden decorations, and old-school fire trucks from a century ago are a pleasure to see in person. The museum is run by hardworking volunteers, further adding to its small-town charm.

If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, there are some world-class mountains close to Polson to visit. Blacktail Mountain Ski Area and Whitefish Mountain Resort are home to expert skiing slopes and easy trails for beginners too.
