Surrounded by the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve, Poolesville is an atmospheric town that clusters around a heritage-listed historic district. It was named after the brothers John Poole, Sr. and Joseph Poole, Sr. who once owned much of the land before selling it off to merchants who established the settlement as it’s known today.

During the Civil War, the Corps of Observation was established just outside of Poolesville, Maryland to prevent Confederates from crossing the Potomac River, with the infamous Battle of Ball’s Bluff fought nearby. The old cemetery at the Poolesville Methodist Church contains the remains of numerous soldiers who were either killed in action or died of illness at the camp.

Aside from its military and architectural history, Poolesville is within easy access of hiking trails and conservation areas where you can explore the great outdoors, making it a great place to rent an RV. It’s a short drive from the museums of Germantown and Gaithersburg while being under an hour's drive from the bright lights of Washington, D.C.

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your campervan rental in Poolesville and make the short drive east to the Hoyles Mill Conservation Park, a secluded and largely undeveloped natural area. It’s traversed by the Hoyles Mill Trail that extends 6.3 miles from the Black Hill Regional Park through Boyds Local Park to Hoyles Mill before continuing south into the South Germantown Recreation Park. You can stop here to take advantage of the adventure playground, mini-golf facilities, and splash park, then continue south to the end of the trail at Schaeffer Farms.

If you’re visiting the Black Hill Regional Park, be sure to stop in at the Black Hill Visitor Center which showcases the ecology of the region. It’s situated overlooking Little Seneca Lake and surrounded by trails that can be explored independently or during one of their nature programs. Let the kids loose in the children’s corner and natural play spaces or wander through the center’s native plant gardens and meadows.

A short drive north of Poolesville takes you to the Dickerson Conservation Park, which extends along the shores of the Potomac River. There are various nature trails that meander through the wooded surrounds, as well as picnic tables where you can enjoy lunch while soaking up the views. It also offers a good vantage of the Dickerson Whitewater Course if you want to see skilled canoeists and kayakers honing their skills on the slalom course.
