Portage is a town in Wood County, Ohio, that was established in 1836; it should not be confused with Portage County, which is much farther east and unrelated. The Portage Post Office was established in 1829, and both take their name from the nearby Portage River. The word “portage” is a Native American word meaning “to carry” (early natives and even contemporary canoe buffs “portage” their canoes between water sources that are disconnected). Wood County was created in 1820, not too long before Portage, as a result of the Lower Maumee Treaty of 1817. Portage village was incorporated in 1857.

Book an RV in Wood County, and you are ready to begin exploring this scenic and captivating land. There are a few other towns and villages worth visiting. Holland is a suburb of Toledo and has an antique popcorn museum. Woodville has been established as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Fostoria was a major glass manufacturer around the end of the 19th century; today it is known for its railroad activity and is a beacon for rail enthusiasts. Ottawa was named after one of two Native American tribes who originally inhabited the area. Your Portage travel trailer rental is your invitation to experience life in this area first-hand.

The Great Outdoors

Oak Openings Preserve Metropark consists of wetlands and vegetated dunes that alternate throughout an oak savannah ecosystem that inhabits most of the park. There are miles upon miles of nature trails running through pine and spruce tree stands. Visitors are also allowed to go mountain bike riding on hard surface trails, while horseback riders and hikers can enjoy the soft surface trails. Camping is allowed, and visitors to the park in winter can enjoy cross-country skiing. Birdwatchers can look for indigo buntings, whippoorwills, and lark sparrows, among other species.

Maumee State Forest provides public access to hikers and other nature enthusiasts, but it also serves scientific purposes by raising genetically superior tree samples that are grafted into pre-existing orchards; the seeds from these trees are planted in state tree nurseries and provided for reforestation efforts. Tree and shrub species are further tested for their viability as potential windbreaks. Picnicking is allowed in the park; keep your Portage RV trailer rental nearby and you can enjoy a hot meal in your RV or outside on the lawn, whichever you prefer.

Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge was donated to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by the Cedar Point Shooting Club in 1964; it provides a habitat where birds migrating between their nesting and wintering grounds can rest and refuel. Migrating waterfowl feed on the native millet and smartweed; other areas have plants and vegetation above and below the waterline which provide both food and shelter. The park allows waterfowl and deer hunting, wildlife viewing, and will arrange specially guided tours for photographers through its visitor center.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds in the area surrounding Portage village, and some of them may have mobile homes. Your Portage camper rental is all you will need to have a relaxing and enjoyable vacation no matter where you decide to stay.

Fire Lake Camper Park is an RV campground located near a lake. It has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and a camp store. The park is child and pet-friendly, with a playground and fishing nearby; individual sites have gravel pads and full hookups. Some sites have pull-through access, and there are some seasonal guests.

Exploring The City

There is lots to do in and around Portage, starting with the museums. One of them is dedicated to antique cars and is near U.S. 6, one of the first cross-country highways in America. The museum tour begins with a recreated 1940's Texaco gas station, continues through a working garage where additional classic cars undergo restoration, and ends in a showroom filled with antiques from the 1930s through to the '60s and some antique military vehicles. An authentic and historic working farm demonstrates what life was like during the Great Depression, and a local planetarium has an outdoor deck and puts on monthly shows about different astronomy topics. Don't forget that RV vacations are unique and should be enjoyed to the fullest; there is nothing like cruising down a highway in your Portage motorhome rental while riding high above the surrounding traffic, an experience you don't want to miss.

When it's time for dinner, there is a good selection of different cuisines available in and around Portage. One Mediterranean restaurant has an extensive menu and weekly specials on top of already-reasonably priced items. Diners checking this place out should try the Chicken Shawarma platter. Another local venue is a bar-style barbecue joint; it has an open floor space with a high ceiling and a huge TV broadcasting sports. Buffalo wings are their specialty; diners eating here should try the Tailgating Sampler appetizer. Those seeking a quieter place to eat can grab some takeout and head back to their Portage luxury RV rental for a dinner under the stars. Nothing says vacation like enjoying your meal seated in your favorite lawn chair, and this is definitely the time to do it.
