Located in south-eastern Ionia County, Michigan, the bustling town of Portland is often referred to as the City of Two Rivers, offering small-town charm and lots of great things to see and do. Portland Main Street is where it is all happening, and heading just a little way out of town you’ll find a range of beautiful green and open spaces.

The Great Outdoors

There are a number of parks and outdoor spaces within the town itself, all which to help make Portland remarkably green. Joe Tichvon Park is just a small 1.27 acres, and provides a lot of family fun thanks to its open play area, basketball hoop and pad, and a number of picnic tables for your family to enjoy lunch.

Two Rivers Park is a beautiful half-mile linear trail along both the Grand and Looking Glass Rivers. The park offers some beautiful views, therefore is a great spot for a picnic. The pedestrian bridge over the river and canoe launch helps to give a different perspective of the town while you are out exploring for the day.

Powers Park is also located on the banks of the Grand River and is home to an outdoor ice rink during the winter months. Other parks in town include Rivertrail Linear Park, Brush Street School Park, Riverfront Park, William Toan Park, Bogue Flats Recreation Area, and Roadside Park.

With a boat launch, canoe and kayak rental, fire rings, picnic tables, and live bait for fishing, you could spend days just enjoying the surrounding area. Many of the large riverfront sites offer some great views of the river.

Exploring the City

One of the best ways to spend a day in Portland is simply to enjoy its vibrant downtown district, home to the famous old-fashioned town clock, which overlooks Main Street. The Main Street is a hive of activity, with locals and tourists alike popping into the many shops and eateries, a place boasting rich history coupled with vibrant growth.

There are a number of family-friendly activities in and around town, which include a music venue, escape room, and arts council. Outdoor amenities are also in abundance, with miles of trails to explore and seven bridges that span across the river.

The historic Kent Street area helps to reflect the community spirit that Portland offers and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The area is known for the variety of buildings, which includes brick Late Victorian blocks, early 20th-century commercial brick buildings, a Neoclassical bank, Moderne movie theater, modernized false front buildings, and many others.
