If your primary motive for visiting Punxsutawney is to get out into nature, you are in luck. Western Pennsylvania is absolutely saturated with hunting areas, secluded fishing spots, state parks, lush forests, old mountain ranges, and scenic lakes that you can visit when you rent an RV. Moraine State Park is just one example of where you can spend part of your vacation, located a short drive to the west. This gorgeous park is named for the glacial moraines left behind thousands of years ago during the end of the last ice age. The park sits on the edge of Lake Arthur, so fishing, swimming, and boating are all possible. You can also go hunting, hiking, hot air ballooning, camping in your Punxsutawney campervan rental, or take part in the annual sailing regatta held in August.

Prince Gallitzin State Park also has its own lake, and boating, swimming, and fishing are quite common here. This lovely forest shares a name with the Allegheny River which runs through the forest. Ninety percent of the national forest is covered in an actual forest, with a large percentage of it considered old growth. Western Pennsylvania is loaded with campgrounds and RV parks, thanks to its incredibly popular parks and outdoor recreation areas. Willow Farm Campground is one of many options you can consider when you rent an RV in town. There is a refreshing pool to swim in when you stay at the campground, along with a recreation hall, a store, and a fishing pond.

Rustic Acres Campground has a variety of campsite types, for tent camping, group camping, and RV camping too. The park has a mini-golf course, basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoes, and lots of other fun games to keep you occupied while stoking your competitive fire.

Lumber City RV Park is another solid option, with spacious campsites and a convenient location. You can enjoy any number of activities while staying at this campground too, most notably playing disc golf on the park’s course.

Punxsutawney is a homey village with a distinct feel to it that cannot be described, so you’ll have to visit it for yourself. A simple stroll through the downtown area of Punxatawney will yield some pretty special sights as well, as it is the best way to move throughout the highly walkable area, perusing fantastic local shops, restaurants, wineries, bars, and other businesses.

It is no secret that most people come to town, or are at the very least aware of its existence because of the yearly Groundhog’s Day celebration that is considered a public holiday in the United States. Most of the town’s attractions revolve around the furry weather predictor, like the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center. This unique museum covers all the local lore surrounding the origins of Groundhog’s Day, the name of the groundhog, and why the first settlers in the area believed that it was an accurate way to predict how long winter will last. The museum is great for people of all ages, and it has a souvenir shop should you feel the need to bring some gifts home for friends and family members.

If you are still wondering and wanting to learn more about Punxatawney Phil, you can visit his actual burrow in the heart of town in one of its public park spaces. The woodland critter is situated in a safe habitat protected from the public, surrounded by statues and other neat things. You can also visit historic homes that once belonged to people (not that there’s anything wrong with groundhog homes), like the historic Christian Miller Home or the T. M. Kurtz House.
