Quakertown, Pennsylvania is a historic borough between Allentown and Philadelphia. It famously housed the Liberty Bell overnight during the American Revolutionary War and was the birthplace of the John Fries Rebellion, an armed tax revolt by Pennsylvania Dutch farmers in 1799.

It wasn’t until the first post office opened in 1803 that the settlement became known as Quakertown and flourished during the American Civil War from a small village into a thriving manufacturing hub. Today its historic streets and proximity to scenic natural areas make it an ideal place to rent an RV while discovering the sights and attractions of Bucks County.

Discover Quakertown

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Quakertown and head east to the Nockamixon State Park, which is one of the most popular recreational areas in southeastern Pennsylvania. It centers around the waters of Lake Nockamixon, a reservoir that can be explored by boat or kayak and is inhabited by walleye, pickerel, carp, and a variety of bass. Follow one of the hiking and biking trails along the northern side of the lake or rent a horse in Haycock to explore the southern shores.

Drive in the opposite direction from Quakertown, and you’ll arrive at the Green Lane Reservoir and its surrounding park, which is a hub for fishing, boating, and picnicking. There are around 25 miles or nature trails that attract hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, as well as two children’s playgrounds where young visitors can let loose. If you’re visiting during the winter months, you can go cross-country skiing around the Green Lane Reservoir, as well as ice skating and ice fishing if conditions are safe.

If you’re a keen birdwatcher, head to the 1,500-acre Peace Valley Park that surrounds the picturesque waters of Lake Galena near Doylestown. Begin your visit at the nature center in the park’s northeast section where you can learn about the more than 250 bird species that frequent the area, then walk to the nearby bird hide to try your luck at spotting some. You can also hit the hiking trails of the Peace Valley Park while keeping an eye out for bald eagles, common sparrows, and white-tailed deer, as well as groundhogs and native rabbits.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Quakertown and drive to the Quakerwoods Campground, which offers a range of full hookup sites for RVs. Amenities include a swimming pool, basketball court, and children’s playground, as well as weekend activities and hayrides during the summer season.

Also nearby is the Tohickon Family Campground, which offers 200 campsites with a mix of primitive, partial, and full hook-up sites. There’s a swimming pool, playground, and game room to keep both the young and old entertained, as well as modern bathhouse facilities and a fully-stocked general store where you can pick up supplies.

Slightly farther away is the Allentown KOA, which nestles in a secluded mountain valley near New Tripoli. This family-friendly, alcohol-free campground features two playgrounds, a pool, and a game room, as well as a new recreational center where live entertainment, movies, and bingo are regularly held.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Quakertown and head out to explore the Quakertown Historic District on foot, with architectural landmarks that range from Federal to Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian styles. Heritage-listed buildings not to miss include the Liberty Hall, which was built in 1772 as the first permanent residence in Quakertown and is said to have hidden the Liberty Bell on its way to Allentown. Also of note is the Enoch Roberts House, a charming Georgian-style mansion with blue shutters that dates to 1814.

Need some retail therapy? Spend an afternoon at the Quakertown Shopping Plaza where you’ll find a variety of retail stores and restaurants. There’s also a cinema complex and ten-pin bowling alley nearby, not to mention a fitness center if you don’t want to miss a workout. Or, coincide your visit with the weekend Quakertown Farmers Market and Flea Market to pick up fresh produce, antiques, and local bargains.

Quakertown makes a good base for exploring the sights of Allentown, which lies just a 30-minute drive to the north. See a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell inside the historic Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ and browse the ancient tools, pottery, and artifacts belonging to the region’s first inhabitants at the Museum of Indian Culture. You can get your cultural fix while admiring the modern American works at the Allentown Art Museum or let the kids loose on the rollercoasters and waterslides of Dorney Park.

Quakertown is home to numerous supermarkets and shopping centers where you’ll find everything you need, as well as a diverse selection of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out. There are also plenty of gas stations if you want to fill up your camper rental in Quakertown.
