Before the Frisco railroad was built during the late 1800’s, Republic was a very small community. Once the railway was complete, the town of Republic, whose economy predominantly relied on agriculture, rapidly grew to become an essential shipping and travel point in the county. Nowadays, the town preserves it agricultural heritage through historical building and interesting museums, as well as providing visitors with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and cafes to peruse.

Although the town is not on many travelers radar, it provides everything one could need for a perfect outdoor recreational adventure in Greene County.

The Great Outdoors

One of the most unique and visited sites in Republic is Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. Visitors to the site may be surprised to learn that this, now idyllic green space, was once the site of one of the first major battles of the Civil War. In 1861, Union and Confederate soldiers fought it out in this space to decide who would gain control of the state of Missouri. Now, this historic space is open to the public, with regular engaging tours running that highlight some of the noteworthy landmarks showcasing this memorable battle. If you don’t fancy joining a tour, guide yourself around the five miles of paved trails, looking out for informative signs dotted around the park. Make sure to stop at Bloody Hill and take time to ponder the great battle that took place here whilst appreciating the panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
