Richmond is a city in and the county seat of Wayne County, Indiana; it has a number of claims to fame, like being where the very first motion picture was shown to an audience. Charles Francis Jenkins patented the Phantoscope projector in 1894-5. Thomas Edison later purchased and renamed a modified version of the Phantoscope as Edison's Vitascope, which he used to project motion pictures in New York City vaudeville theaters, ushering in the age of cinema. There is a rumor that Richmond, Indiana is the smallest city in the nation to have had a professional opera company and professional symphony orchestra (the orchestra still exists today, but the opera company doesn't). The city has a number of nicknames: “the cradle of jazz”; the “Mummy capital of Indiana” (two of Indiana's three mummies are kept here); the “lawnmower capital” (one of Richmond's first manufactured products); and the “Rose City” (it once grew many different varieties of roses).

RV rentals in Wayne County are the perfect way to explore this diverse area. While you're here, you should check out some other nearby cities. Winchester is home to the racetrack Winchester Speedway. Muncie is thought to be one of the most studied cities of its size in the nation. Spiceland began in 1850 as an agricultural city specializing in spices. Liberty has three listings on the National Register of Historic Places: Liberty Courthouse Square Historic District; Liberty Residential Historic District; and Union County Courthouse. Your Richmond travel trailer rental is your invitation to experience this historic area for yourself.

The Great Outdoors

Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge is open weekdays from early morning to late afternoon and some Saturdays from mid-April to November; visitors should confirm dates and times with the refuge office. The refuge is managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service to maintain the natural ecosystems and endangered species such as the Indiana bat. It is comprised of grasslands, flatwoods, and caves. Hunting and fishing are allowed in season, and visitors can engage in wildlife viewing and photography; guests can use the photography blind at Old Timbers Lake. Guided interpretation tours and educational programs are also offered.

Brown County State Park is managed by the Indiana State Park system to be self-sufficient and to guarantee children's rights to access nature. The park has interpretive centers where visitors can ask questions and prepare for their activities before embarking. Visitors can climb a 90-foot-tall observation tower to view the surrounding area, see endangered Yellowwood trees while hiking the trails, and view the nature center's exhibits, including the endangered timber rattlesnake. A park swimming pool is open to the public, and overnight guests can rent a hotel room or cabin.

Yellowwood State Forest was created when the federal government leased the land to Indiana State in 1940; the state managed the forest until 1956 when it secured the deed to the land and took possession. The forest has a variety of tree species such as black walnut and white and red oak. The park is a popular destination for hunters seeking white-tailed deer, foxes, and turkeys among other game species; fishing is allowed on the lakes and rowboats can be rented (boat motors are restricted to electric motors). Gold panning can be enjoyed on a hobby basis and with a permit; hiking, horseback riding, and picnicking are allowed, and there are primitive campsites for those who want to stay overnight. Park your Richmond camper rental here, and you can combine outdoor recreation with the creature comforts of home.
