Founded in 1830s during Pennsylvania’s coal boom, the town was named after the original owner of the land, St. Clair Nichols. The tiny town of St. Clair saw its population grow to a peak high of 8,000 resident. When the railroad network grew to the point where other sources of more easily accessible coal could be had (late 1800s, early 1900), the town dwindled. Its population steadied when a new industry moved into the area: the production of fuses, squibs, and caps, which were used by mining companies to blast rocks.

St. Clair was the site of one of the worst mining accidents which occurred in 1869. Although the local miners attempted to form an union, conditions did not improve for several years, and no formal safety procedures were implemented. St. Clair, PA is also known for the Molly Maguires Murders, a secret Irish-miner organization who were accused of murdering nine foremen and supervisors in 1876. The sole witness was unreliable and gave conflicting accounts of the events; however, due to the mass hysteria, 20 miners were sentenced to be hanged. It’s also suspected that the judge and some of the jurists were paid off in order to prevent more labor unions from forming.

The closest large town is Bloomsburg, about 35 miles north.

The Great Outdoors

Though the Blue Mountain looms temptingly close, much of this ridge is private property, owned by local landowners, lumber mills, and mine companies. However, when you book an RV in Saint Clair, you’ll gain easy access to the local state game lands, state forests, and parks. There are a handful of state game lands within a few minutes of St. Clair, and all put together, they cover several thousands acres of territory. Hike, bike, and explore the wilderness for most of the year. Between mid-October and early December are the prime hunting season, during which it’s highly recommended that all outdoorsmen wear blaze-orange, whether they’re hunting or not. Safety first! Hunters are required to obtain the appropriate permits and gun licenses. The state game land managers are known to be strict and have in the past issued fines for exceeding the bag limit or for hunting outside the appropriate season.

The closest state park, Tuscarora State Park, is a moderately sized park with a large lake stretching out nearly the entire width of the park. Open year-round and hikers may enjoy several miles of trails that wind through mature oak, tulip poplar, ash, and maple woods that transform into blazing orange, red, and yellow in autumns. Several species of wildlife make their home at this part; a short list includes screech owl, great-horned owl, black bear, deer, and more. Photographers and nature lovers will delight in this park. Fish, too, are plentiful, and fishermen can expect to catch species like bass, catfish, pickerel, and a few others. Near the “beach,” the state park rents small non-motorized boats. Tuscarora Lake, though deep, is quite calm because it’s sheltered by two mountain ranges. Bring your Saint Clair camper rental and enjoy the water! Though this is a day-use park, there are plenty of parking. Private campgrounds are conveniently close by, too, and are perfect for a rental RV.

RV Parks

While you’re exploring this part of Pennsylvania, be sure to allow ample time to figure out where you’ll stay overnight. There are several RV friendly campgrounds in the area. Rosemount Camping Resort in Tamaqua, is a full-service campground, offering everything from free WiFi to full-hookups and camp store to cable TV at each lot.

Camp-a-While may be a good candidate, too. It’s an old-fashioned campground, though it does offer full hookups, and each RV site has a fire ring. Set in picturesque woods, access to local hiking trails is conveniently close by. Catch trout for breakfast at the local fishing pond, too.

Exploring the City

Though the town life is slower paced, that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do in the area. With a little creativity, adventure, and fun can be found, made easier by exploring the area in a rental RV. The local community actors’ guild regularly presents plays at the Majestic Theater in Pottsville. The theater, which still has the original facade, was opened in 1910, and it is one of the oldest still-operating theaters in the area. In addition to hosting local theater groups’ events, it also shows independent films and movies on a regular basis.

Jerry’s Classic Cars and Collectible Museum is home to not only dozens of classic automobiles, but also a drive-in theater, library, soda shop, and a barbershop. Take a whirl or two at beating a 1960s pinball machine, figure out how a 1950s jukebox machine works, and ogle a dazzling, colorful collection of vintage cars ranging from 1920s to 1970s, including a ‘62 Volkswagen Beetle, Studebaker “Bullet Nose” Commander, Ford Mustang, and more.

Born on the front porch of a Philadelphia home, Rita’s Italian Ice is a local favorite. It’s known for sumptuous Italian ices, “cream ice," gelatin's, and custards. Somewhat similar to a sno-cone, the Italian ice lacks dairy and egg ingredients, making it a healthy and delicious frozen dessert. It’s a refreshing, tasty treat at the end of a long day of sightseeing and adventure in central Pennsylvania.

If it's a calm, serene, beautiful Pennsylvania town you are seeking to explore, consider a motorhome in Saint Clair. Enjoy some Italian ice with the family, spend the day in a park, and take in the scenery. Rent an RV in Saint Clair, PA, and go explore Pennsylvania!
