Saint Johns, Michigan is a small town not far from the state's capital of Lansing, in an area known as Mid Michigan. It’s primarily a farming community, but its location adjacent to Highway 127 makes it well connected with the rest of the state; both Ann Arbor and Detroit are within day-tripping distance.

The incredibly rich soil of Mid Michigan is excellent for growing mint, something St. Johns has become well known for. Production of mint was ramped up at the beginning of the 20th-century as Chicago-based manufacturer Wrigley’s required massive amounts of mint oil for their popular chewing gum. St. Johns is now known as "The Mint Capital of the World" and celebrates its agriculture feats each year with the St John’s Mint Festival in the second week of August.

The Great Outdoors

Maple River State Game Area is a popular spot for area hunters and is Mid Michigan’s largest wetlands area. Even if you don’t have the equipment or permits for hunting here, it’s a fantastic place to do some hiking or wildlife watching. Stick to the eastern section of the park and take a stroll along the dikes to see some beautiful birds feeding in the ponds below.

For a more urban outdoor adventure with a camper rental from St. Johns, check out the River Trail in Lansing. This 13-mile-long path is a favorite of Michigan State University students and runs from the school to Dietrich Park along the Red Cedar and Grand Rivers. It’s also home to the Common Ground Music Festival, which takes place each July.

The Potter Park Zoo in Lansing is another great place to spend an afternoon, especially if you have kids in tow. It’s the oldest public zoo in Michigan and has over 150 species of animals living there including red pandas, tigers, and Bactrian camels. If you or the little ones are animal lovers and interested in conservation, this is a must-see. The area also has a couple of good municipal golf courses if you were hoping to hit the links when you book an RV in St Johns.

Most of the parks in the area are located closer to Lansing or Interstate 69, which runs between the capital and Flint. Holiday Shores RV Park in Durand is one of the closest and offers full hookups, a lake for swimming and fishing, along with a nine-hole golf course. If you were thinking about doing any recreation on Lake Huron during with your motorhome rental in St Johns, this would also be a convenient place to stay in between the two.

There’s also Cottonwood Campground just south of Lansing, which offers tons of amenities. Their sites have full hookups for your St. Johns travel trailer rental along with a swimming pool, volleyball court, laundry facilities, and a full-stocked fishing pond. You might also enjoy the Half Moon Lake Resort outside the town of Stanton, which has several sites along the namesake lake. There’s a small boat dock there if you would like to rent a kayak and paddle around or just enjoy a dip in its cool waters.

A final option would be to get manager permission to camp in the Lansing Walmart parking lot. You won’t have any amenities, but it’s not a bad short-term solution.

Exploring the City

If you’re visiting during the fall harvest, then you absolutely must try the cider. St. Johns has a couple of excellent cider mills that are open for tours and tastings during the months of September and October. They usually have some great activities for the kids too, like wagon rides and pumpkin carvings.

To get a historical perspective on the town, stop in at the Paine-Gilliam-Scott House. Set in a stately brick home on the courthouse square, the building has been home to three of the town’s most prominent families and now serves as the St. Johns Museum. You’ll find all sorts of interesting artifacts from the lives of previous residents along with volunteer staff who can explain the details of town life over the past 150 years.
