Savoy was founded in 1863 by Colonel William Savoy, a pioneer, and landowner. Historians believe that William Savoy was never in the military, and the use of "colonel" was a self-assigned nickname. The settlement grew at a snail's pace until the end of the Civil War, which for some inexplicable reason, brought in an influx of pioneers. The first co-ed college in north Texas opened in Savoy: the Savoy Male and Female College. Between the college and the railroad laying down tracks toward this bustling community, the town grew steadily. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the college in 1890. After the destruction of the college, the town’s population stagnated, and today, it hovers at around 800 residents.

Although Savoy is a tiny town, there’s plenty of places to go and attractions to see, and an RV rental makes it all the easier to get around. The closest large town is Bonham, about 12 miles east.

The Great Outdoors

Minnesota, also known as the Land of Thousand Lakes, has nothing on Texas. There are thousands of lakes and ponds in northern Texas, and unfortunately, most are on private properties. Without knowing the ranch owners’ policies, it’s best to stick to state lands. A Savoy camper rental makes it easy to explore all the pockets of wilderness in the area. Lake Texoma is a popular water recreation park. One of the largest reservoirs of water in the United States, there’s plenty of elbow room for everyone. Unlike many reservoirs, swimming and other water recreational activities are welcomed. Jet-ski, sail, parasail, and kayak. Go fishing in the middle of the lake or from the banks. Due to a geological quirk that leaches salt into the water, the lake is home to both saltwater and freshwater fish.

When people think of Texas, they envision wide-open grasslands and bold blue sky overhead. Caddo National Grasslands fits this vision. The modest 15,000-acre park has several miles of multi-use trails that are occasionally shared with grazing cattle. The trails wind through the open, grassy meadows that bloom into a riot of colors in springtime, and around the two small lakes where otters and beavers forage for snacks. Feral hogs are known to roam the park on occasion; hikers should exercise extreme caution if they spot one. Both Lake Texoma and Caddo National Grasslands have public and private campgrounds very close by. Bring your Savoy travel trailer rental and go exploring.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Savoy, TX, be sure to figure out where you’ll park while you roam the range. Many roads in the backcountry are narrow and lack a safe place to pull over an RV rental. In northern Texas, there are hundreds of RV parks and campgrounds for you to choose from.

The Frontier Day RV Park, just a few miles away in Bonham, TX, is a barebone, old-school facility. It includes full hookups and is pet-friendly, but lacks any additional amenities.

In contrast, the creatively named Route 82 RV Park offers plenty of amenities like free WiFi, a business center, and laundry and restroom facilities. The tall oak trees shade some lots, which is a nice plus on a hot Texas day.

Over near Honey Grove Sandy Creek RV Park is set back in lush green woods, providing a welcome respite from the summer heat and includes a laundry facility. It’s very close to Caddo National Grasslands, which is a nice upside, too.

Exploring the City

Everything even land is supersized in Texas. Towns are far apart, and it can take considerable driving time to get to the local attractions. A smart traveler will grab a motorhome rental in Savoy and travel in comfort to their destination. The Harber Wildlife Museum in Sherman was voted the best museum in northern Texas. The 11,000 square feet facility has several exhibits featuring animals and rare artifacts from around the world, an indoor waterfall, and tour guides.

For a few seconds, you can soar higher than birds fly at 14,000 feet above the earth. At Skydive Spaceland-Dallas in Whitewright, the family-run business is a team of certified divers who will tandem-jump with beginners and train the adventurers who want to jump solo. Spectators are welcome to watch the professional and amateur teams practice from the viewing deck.

Step back into time at Denison’s Frontier Village. Walk the same dirt roads that gunslingers once prowled. A mix of original and replica buildings line the streets, including a log cabin that was used as a schoolhouse. Guests can explore the unassuming interior, learn about how the pioneers preserved their food in the old days without electricity or running water, and get glimpses into life in the old west.

Rent an RV in Savoy and set out to roam the Texas range right alongside antelopes and the cattle.
