Scranton is a city in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania and was founded in the late 18th century. It was incorporated as a borough in 1856 and as a city in 1866. Since its inception, it has become a center for mining and railroads even though it was the iron and steel industries that led to its success and growth. The Pennsylvania Coal Company built a gravity railroad in the 1850s in order to move their product to market. The town's growth attracted more settlers, and it grew from an agrarian-based village into an industrial and multicultural city. Scranton was nicknamed “The Electric City” after the first electric (trolley) streetcar system was built in 1886. More electric streetcar companies began to appear, and in 1896, they were consolidated to form the Scranton Railway Company which managed the trolley system until 1954. Today, the city focuses on its history and historic properties and encourages the tourism industry as one of the sources of its economy.

RV rentals in Lackawanna County are how your vacation will begin; where you take it from there is up to you. There are other cities that are worth exploring. Honesdale was the start of the Delaware and Hudson Canal in the 19th century and was important in the transportation of coal until being replaced by the railways. Milford is part of the New York Metropolitan Area despite being situated in Pennsylvania. Berwick's high school football team, the Bulldogs, are six-time state and three-time national champions, for which Berwick is well known. Tunkhannock's Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August 2005. Your Scranton RV rental is your invitation to explore and experience this part of Pennsylvania.

The Great Outdoors

Loyalsock State Forest is named after the creek that runs through it; it is situated across three counties, Sullivan, Lycoming, and Bradford. Its forest consists mainly of stands of hardwood trees. The park is a multi-use working forest that provides opportunities for timber cultivation, natural gas extraction, recreation, plant and animal habitat, and much more. Prior to its establishment, the forest was owned by a lumber company; visitors exploring the forest will find the remains of the ghost sawmill towns that processed the raw timber. Visitors can enjoy hiking, picnicking, and many other outdoor activities here.

Pinchot State Forest is named after Gifford Pinchot, one of the earliest members and a founder of the American Conservation Movement. The park has a couple of recreation and camping areas and a number of trails where visitors can mountain bike, hike, or go snowmobile riding in the winter. The trails follow the forest's creeks in certain areas and offer good opportunities to view the plant and wildlife. Park your Scranton camper rental nearby, and you can combine all the creature comforts of home with your rustic outdoor adventures.

Prompton State Park is open from dawn to dusk all year round and is centered around Prompton Lake, which has one boat launch; powered and non-powered boats are both allowed, and the lake is a good resource for fishing. The lake is a warm water fishery with large and smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and crappie, to name a few. Hiking and mountain biking are allowed on the park's numerous trails, which are a combination of rocky terrain and smooth forest floor. Hunting is allowed in season, and there is a disc golf course and also picnic areas. Visitors can cross-country ski in the park in winter.
