Shelton sits on the far southwestern corner of Puget Sound, on the shores of Oakland Bay. Due to its location in a quiet cove, Shelton has remained relatively untouched by the bustling city of nearby Seattle. Instead, you’ll find the same beautiful agriculture and fishing community that has existed for decades. In fact, the charming little town is nicknamed the Christmas Tree Capital thanks to the abundant forests and numerous sawmills still operating just outside the city limits.

However, Shelton is also just a short drive from the big city of Tacoma if you need to do any shopping or are looking for a night out on the town. Traffic can get pretty congested there, so you might want to use public transportation to get around the metropolis when you rent an RV in Shelton.

The Great Outdoors

RV rentals in Shelton are an outdoor enthusiasts dream vacation thanks to the many state parks and wildlife areas just outside of town. It should be noted, though, that thanks to its location on the Olympic Peninsula, you should come prepared for rain when participating in any outdoor activity. It may not last all day, but it’s always a good idea to bring an umbrella or a waterproof jacket.

Harstine Island State Park, just northeast of Shelton, is one of the more popular places in the area to get outside. It’s a great place for a picnic or just to stroll along one of its scenic trails, but the most popular activity here is shellfish collecting. All sorts of oysters, clams, and crustaceans can be found along its shores – just be aware of how much you can take so as to not run afoul of local regulations. Jarell Cove State Park is another one worth checking out and is also on Harstine Island. It’s pretty small, but it also doesn’t see too many visitors, so you should find some peace and quiet here. If you have a boat, there are two piers where you launch from and explore the area's many coves, otherwise, consider just wandering the beaches and taking in the stunning Pacific Northwest scenery.

Given the town’s location on the Olympic Peninsula, it would be a shame if you didn’t visit Olympic National Park when getting a travel trailer rental in Shelton. It’s one of the premier parks in America’s national park system if for no other reason than the sheer variety of ecosystems within its borders. On the western edge is the Hoh Rainforest, one of the most impressive temperate rainforests in the world. But on the eastern side is Hurricane Ridge, a desolate peak standing over 5,000 feet high. With a few days' time and a lot of effort, you can hike between these vastly different places and see the many changes in flora and fauna along the way.
