Situated around 100 miles to the northeast of Houston, Silsbee is a historic town that forms part of the Beaumont-Port Arthur metropolitan area. It was named after Nathaniel Silsbee who provided funds for the Gulf, Beaumont and Kansas City Railway that transformed the town’s fortunes in 1894. It served the Kirby Lumber Company, which was Silsbee’s main industry during its earliest years when it was known as Mill Town.
Today, Silsbee is a laid-back place to rent an RV while exploring the wildlife refuges and national forests of southeast Texas. It’s well-served by family-friendly campgrounds while being less than half an hour’s drive from the bustling hub of Beaumont.
Book an RV rental in Silsbee and head south to the Village Creek State Park, which is named after a tributary of the Neches River that winds through the reserve. There is a children’s playground and around 10 miles of hiking trails for exploring the cypress swamps where white-tailed deer and snapping turtles can be spotted. If you want to hit the water, there’s also a canoe launch that accesses around 40 miles of streams and a swimming beach where you can cool off during the summer months.
Or, drive west to the Sam Houston National Forest, which encompasses 163,037 acres on the edge of Lake Livingston. It’s traversed by the 128-mile-long Lone Star Hiking Trail (the longest continuously marked and maintained footpath in Texas), with the option to follow just a section or the entire length. Anglers should head to Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston to see what’s biting or you can rent canoes and paddle boats at Double Lake to explore the waters at your leisure.
Closer to Silsbee is the Big Thicket National Preserve, which has been described as one of the most biodiverse areas in the world outside of the tropics. It’s crisscrossed by 40 miles of hiking trails that wind through the pine and cypress forests, meadows, and blackwater swamps, with the park designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981. Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse array of bird species that frequent the area or opt to explore while canoeing and kayaking along the meandering waterways.
