On the outskirts of Salinas and a two hour's drive south of San Francisco, you can book an RV in Spreckels, California and see one of the nation’s best-preserved company towns. Spreckels takes its name from the Spreckels Sugar Company, owned by Claus Spreckels. This peaceful little community was built by the company to house the factory workers for nearly 100 years before it finally closed its doors in 1982.

Spreckels benefits from being quite close to the California coastline, surrounded by pleasant coastal villages. The epic beaches to the west are enough to make you glad you chose to rent an RV in the area but there are quite a few other reasons to plan your next trip to Spreckels too. National forests, state parks, nature reserves, and recreation areas are abundant in central California, so any nature lover would relish the opportunity to tour the region. In the summertime, the town’s annual Fourth of July celebration is the place to be, with thousands of people running in the races or marching in the parade. Spreckels is a festive and fun place to find yourself on vacation, especially when you are seeking a laid-back vibe.

Outdoors Adventures

If you make the decision to rent an RV anywhere near the Pacific Ocean in coastal California, you are in for a treat. The beaches alone are responsible for a great deal of the region’s tourism, and it’s not surprising once you visit them for yourself. Salinas River State Beach is quite close to town and more than deserving of a visit if you are wondering where to go in your Spreckels camper rental. The beach is located on Highway 1 outside of Moss Landing and has miles of rugged coastline to stroll along while gazing out onto the Pacific Ocean. This beach park is not ideal for swimming due to turbulent waters but expert swimmers and surfers can still make use of the surf there. There are interesting shipwrecks offshore that you can see or photograph, along with beautiful sunsets.

Fremont Peak State Park is a tiny recreation area northeast of Spreckels, where you can do a variety of fun things. You can hike through the park’s forests or up to the summit of Fremont Peak, a testament to California’s bountiful beauty. There is an observatory at the apex of the mountain, along with several camping sites for people with RVs or tents to use. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is located to the south of Spreckels and is one of the state’s most well-known and beloved parks. The park covers a large swath of land by the coast, with some of the most epic driving roads imaginable. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is oftentimes referred to as “Little Yosemite” for its astonishing scenery and diverse geological features. There is a large hotel lodge on site for guests to stay in style and campgrounds for you to use with your Spreckels RV rental by owner.

There is a national park quite close to town which interestingly enough is one of the smallest and newest in the entire country. Pinnacles National Park is a fraction of the size of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, but equally, if not more, impressive. There are remnants of an ancient volcano at Pinnacles National Park that you can explore, and endless hiking trails weaving up and down the mountainous lands of the area. Rock climbers flock to this amazing recreation destination to make use of towering rock faces that are ideal for people of all abilities. Naturally, there are a few places to park your Spreckels camper rental overnight during your stay.

RV Parks to Visit

You won’t have much trouble locating parks and campgrounds to stay at when you rent an RV near Spreckels, but you might have difficulty choosing which one works best for you. Moss Landing KOA Express belongs to a national chain of campgrounds and has features like scenic coastal hikes and fishing areas along the water. Salinas/Monterey KOA Campground also belongs to the same chain and has amenities to keep you occupied during your stay. The park’s pool is open year-round so beating the sweltering summer heat is not a problem.

Marina Dunes RV Resort is right on the ocean, close to downtown Monterey. It has its own clubhouse complete with a pool hall and game room, a playground for kids, volleyball and basketball courts, a gift shop, and more. If the scenic hikes at this coastal campground don’t do it for you, head to one of the nearby state parks for some bare bones camping while reconnecting with the great outdoors.

City Sightseeing

The town of Spreckels is essentially a subset of Salinas so all worthwhile attractions, restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, and other places of interest are more likely to be found in the larger town center. The Steinbeck House is a gorgeous Victorian house which belonged to the family of legendary American author, John Steinbeck. Steinbeck was born in the house over 100 years ago and the home has been preserved to honor him. Some volunteers created a gift shop, restaurant, and small museum to bring in money so they could continue to take care of the cherished Victorian house. The National Steinbeck Center is another facility devoted to the legacy of John Steinbeck, with awesome exhibits, priceless artifacts from his life, and on-stage theatrical productions in an intimate theater. This tribute to one of America’s greatest writers has a restaurant and shop of its own as well.

Monterey Zoo is a smaller zoo but one of great beauty and promise. The zoo operates more like an animal shelter, helping heal and rehabilitate injured wildlife in a peaceful setting, and without the crowds of massive facilities like Bronx Zoo or San Diego Zoo.

Back in Spreckels, you can take a tour of the town on foot to see some of the historic buildings belonging to the old sugar company. It offers a great deal of insight into the past where you can really imagine how things once looked in tiny Spreckels.
