Located just a little way southwest of Washington DC, Suitland-Silver Hill is the perfect location to explore Prince George's County in Maryland, known as the Old Line State. The town is named after Samuel Taylor Suit, a local politician, and businessman who purchased the land the town now sits on to build the Suitland Estate in 1867.

The area was originally occupied by the Piscataway tribe, but by the 1660s settlers had started to arrive in large numbers and they moved north. Tobacco production in the years before the American Civil War made Prince George’s County one of the wealthiest in Maryland. The plantations were broken up, and farming communities established after the war and the economy remained farming based until the Second World War. A number of military establishments have been built in the area including Andrews Air Force Base and Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling along with the NASA Headquarters and the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Discover Suitland-Silver Hill

The Great Outdoors

Traveling in your camper rental from Suitland-Silver Hill is all about exploring the vast outdoors, and this area offers plenty of opportunity for just that. Running along the Potomac River, directly opposite in Mount Vernon, you’ll find Piscataway Park. Named after the Creek that runs through it, this 5000-acre park protects the shoreline from development and historical sites such as the National Colonial Farm located on 200 acres area of the park. Along with birdwatching and walking trails, visitors can also hire and launch boats in the park.

Patuxent River Park was established in 1962 with over 7,500 acres of parkland along the Patuxent River and is one of the most beautiful areas of Prince George’s County. Park visitors will find trails, historic sites, birdwatching areas, and water sports on the river, along with an abundance of wildlife. Kayak and canoe rentals are available at Jug Bay, where you can follow the Patuxent Water Trail.

While in the Washington DC area, consider a visit to the United States National Arboretum. Packed into a little under 450 acres, the site offers numerous different gardens, an education program with exhibitions and group tours, and a herbarium. In the Friendship Garden, you’ll find a wide range of ideas for your own garden that require minimal care, featuring ornamental grasses and bamboo.

RV Parks

When you book a camper rental in Suitland-Silver Hill, you will have a great way of seeing the local area and finding a great place to set up camp during your adventure. Just a short drive to the east, and close to Patuxent River Park, is the Adventure Bound Camping Resort. The majority of sites are full hookup, and many of them are pull-thru to avoid reversing. The park offers a swimming pool, children's play area, shop and shower facilities, plus a fenced dog park for your four-legged friends.

Travel a little ways north of Washington, and you’ll find Cherry Hill Park. This high-end RV park provides all the amenities you’d expect, including standard and premium sites, a splash park, two heated swimming pools, hot tub, a sauna and a cafe to fill-up after all that exercise! The children won’t be bored either as there’s an arcade, mini-golf and basketball court, plus an outdoor movie theater during the summer.

You’ll find the nearest Walmart on the Woodyard Crossing Shopping Center under a 10-mile drive in your Suitland-Silver Hill RV rental where you may be able to park overnight. There are plenty of shopping facilities but do call ahead and check with the manager first if it is okay to stay overnight.

Exploring the City

An interesting afternoon could be spent at the Airman Memorial Museum. Unlike air museums, that feature aircraft, this is dedicated to the story of Air Force enlisted personnel. Exhibits include uniforms, weapons, posters and even letters relating to Air Force life.

Staying with the Air force theme, Andrews Air Force Base holds an annual air show in May, and if you are in the area it may definitely worth a visit. Along with air displays from some of the top aerobatic teams in the world and many displays from individual aircraft, a whole range of other entertainment is on offer to keep the whole family entertained. Drive your motorhome rental from Suitland-Silver Hill and park at the FedEx Field, home of the Redskins, to catch the shuttle bus to the air base.

For an experience of 19th-century Maryland life, make a visit to the Mary Surratt House Museum. The house was built in 1852 by John and Mary Surratt and played a role in the Abraham Lincoln assassination plot. Mary Surratt was hanged in 1865 for her part in the plot, and the house was in private ownership until 1965, when it was restored and opened to the public as a museum.

You’ll find the usual array of fast-food outlets in town, but there are also a couple of Mexican, Chinese and seafood restaurants. Within a few miles, you will find almost any type of cuisine you desire, which is not surprising being so close to Washington D.C.

Should you be seeking those beautiful Cherry Blossoms in nearby Washington, D.C., consider a camper rental in Suitland-Silver Hill. Tour a local museum, enjoy the vast amount of cuisine options, watch a sunrise by the fire, and take in the jaw-dropping landscape.
