Although the town that would become Sunnyvale was officially settled in the late 1830s, it wasn’t considered a part of the United States until 1845, when Texas joined the ranks of the other United States. Today, Sunnyvale is best known for its convenient proximity to Lake Ray Hubbard and the world-famous Mesquite Rodeo.

The closest large town is Dallas, about 15 miles to the west. Arlington, which is where Six Flags over Texas is located, is around 40 miles to the west. Fort Worth, Dallas’ “sister city," is 12 miles past Arlington (roughly 55 miles altogether).

Discover Sunnyvale

The Great Outdoors

When you rent a motorhome in Sunnyvale, you likely want to explore the vast wilderness. Sunnyvale is right on the coast of Lake Ray Hubbard, one of the largest lakes in Texas. It spans over 22,000 acres.

This lake is great for fishing, skiing, relaxing, and recreational boating, and there are dozens of boat ramps and marinas available for use. Several parks hugging the shoreline provide hiking and biking trails, with easy access to beaches for fishing and sunbathing. You will find a lot of fish species here including white and hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, channel, and blue catfish, and white crappie. Black bass, bream, and sand bass are commonly caught, though they are more selective about what part of the lake they frequent. Chat with the local fishermen to get the down-low. Kayak and boat rentals are also available.

To get away from the crowds, hop into your Sunnyvale RV rental and head east to Lake Tawakoni, a 37,879-acre reservoir. Although it’s a long drive, the parks are RV-friendly, and you’ll have no trouble finding a parking spot. If you intend to overnight it, do make reservations in advance due to the lots with hookups are limited. Although this lake is stocked with similar fish to Ray Hubbard, catfish are very abundant, and there are reports of trophy blue catfish catches, particularly in winter months.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Sunnyvale, you’ll need someplace to park for a few days while you explore the area.

Plantation Place, for example, is minutes away from Lake Ray Hubbard and features amenities such as full hookups for your RV, 20, 30, and 50 amps, laundry facilities, free cable, and WiFi.

With a little patience and some driving, you’ll find some alternatives, such as the Holiday Village RV Park in Sachse. Along with full hookups and 30/50 amps, this RV Park provides shade trees for some spots, paved roads, and is pet-friendly.

On occasion, you may have a need to make an unscheduled overnight stop. Approximately a dozen Walmarts are located within 10 miles of Sunnyvale and camping may be allowed at these locations. Be sure to ask the store manager for permission before you settle in.

Exploring the City

Although Sunnyvale is a small town, there’s plenty of things to see and do as you tour the area in your RV rental.

Long Creek Cemetery (Long Creek was the original name of Sunnyvale) in southern Sunnyvale is over 150 years old, with the first recorded burial there dating back to 1855.

Ever wanted to make your own pecan pie? Now you can. Visit the Sunnyvale Pecan Orchard or the Texas Pecanderosa in late November and collect your own pecans. What a great way to make lasting memories with the family!

Sunnyvale is well known for its large antique stores on Highway 80 East. The East Fork Mall, for example, is 40,000 square feet and hosts hundreds of vendors underneath one roof. What a great place to spend an afternoon just browsing around.

Best known as home to the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, the popular Mesquite Rodeo center hosts events most weekends during the summer months. The arena has been remodeled to add new suites, restaurants and other modern amenities for the spectators.

For those of you that are art fanatics! Head over to Dallas and check out its art district. Wander the halls of art museums and galleries including Amon Carter Art Museum, Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, and Dallas Museum of Art. Visit the JFK Memorial and Museum and join a tour that walks you through the fateful day that stunned the entire nation: the assassination of the beloved President Kennedy.

Don’t miss out on an adventure of a lifetime. Cruise over to Six Flags over Texas and Hurricane Harbor parks in Arlington for some family adventure. Both parks feature rides ranging from wild and furious to gentle and tame, ideal for toddlers. Note: Both parks are closed in winters and are open only on weekends during the spring and fall months. The parking lots are able to accommodate your Sunnyvale motorhome rental, but space for large rigs often are limited, particularly on summer weekends.

You will sure get hungry after a whirlwind sightseeing and adventure. Try some of the local BBQ joints in town and decide for yourself which you like better.
