Thibodaux sits just south of the Mississippi River in the lower third of Louisiana, an area most commonly known as Cajun Country. Along with its neighbor Houma, it’s one of the last urban areas before reaching the vast bayou region where the other travelers are oil workers and shrimp boats.

You won’t find the raucous parties of New Orleans when you get an RV rental in Thibodaux, LA, but you might find the very best shrimp étouffée. It’s a place where you can really experience the local culture, not only because the town has multiple museums devoted to the Cajun way of life, but also because you can see that culture just by taking a step outside.

Discover Thibodaux

The Great Outdoors

One of the best things to do when you book an RV in Thibodaux is to see the bayou by airboat. These fan-propelled watercraft are capable of gliding through the wetlands without the risk of snagging on the many obstacles hiding just beneath the surface of the water; they also make an excellent viewing platform for spotting alligators. Tours can be booked through a few different agencies in Thibodaux and nearby Houma.

However, if you’d prefer to see the waterways under your own power, consider renting a kayak and putting in on the Atchafalaya River near Morgan City. The river acts as a spillway for the Mississippi and is flanked by some of the most beautiful cypress forests in Louisiana.

For a unique drive near Thibodaux, take Highway 57 down past the levees, where all of the houses sit on stilts to protect them from flooding and hurricanes. There’s not much to see as you drive to Cocodrie, just vast expanses of grassland sitting inches above the water. That’s the point though, to experience this vast swath of land that could so easily be swallowed up by the Gulf of Mexico.

RV Parks

Thibodaux and its sister city of Houma both have quite a few RV parks within easy driving distance, making this one of the more convenient places to rent an RV. The closest park when getting an RV rental in Thibodaux is Cajun Pride, just outside of town. Their sites have full hookups and bathrooms, and you can’t beat the convenience factor if you want to stay closer to town.

Another option for your motorhome rental from Thibodaux is Amelia RV Park near Morgan City. It’s a pretty basic setup without much in the way of natural surroundings, but they do have full hookups and permit smaller pets in the park. If you’re thinking about driving to Lafayette, Amelia is conveniently located on the highway, which can get you there in a couple of hours.

Just down the road and towards Houma is Capri Court, one of the more luxurious RV parks in the Thibodaux area. It’s nestled into a bayou forest setting, making it a great choice for campers who want to spend time relaxing at the park. It also has full hookups, showers, and laundry facilities.

There’s also the possibility of spending the night camped out in the parking lot of Thibodaux’s Walmart. You’ll need to get the manager’s permission beforehand, but it could be a good place to stay if you don’t mind amenity-free camping.

Exploring the City

Getting a travel trailer rental in Thibodaux is all about experiencing the bayou way of life and Cajun culture, so your first stop should be at the Acadian Cultural Center in the heart of town. It’s run by the National Park Service and has a number of well-curated exhibits focusing on the Acadian expulsion from British Canada during North America’s Colonial Period and the story of how those same people came to form the Cajun culture in southern Louisiana.

The little ones can get in on the Cajun culture at the Bayou Children’s Museum, which offers a variety of hands-on exhibits where the kids can explore the Acadian way of life. They’ll learn how to harvest sugar cane, spot wildlife, and even how to properly throw beads from a Mardi Gras float, all while staying entertained and engaged.

If you feel like taking a road trip with your camper rental from Thibodaux, up towards the Mississippi River and New Orleans, it’s well worth checking out some of the plantations that line the waterway. For the unvarnished truth about what went on in the 18th and 19th centuries, visit the Whitney Plantation, which relies on the collected stories of former slaves interviewed at the turn of the 20th century. While there are other plantations that have a more beautiful house and grounds to explore, the Whitney is probably the best choice for history lovers.
