The suburban community of Tolleson sits on the western end of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area and is a fantastic base camp for exploring the Grand Canyon State. Tolleson is centrally located, with easy interstate access to surrounding cities and wilderness areas; no matter where you want to go in Arizona, you’re only a few hours away in Tolleson.

Book an RV in Tolleson and you can expect a fantastic experience as so few cities are as welcoming to big rigs like those in the American Southwest. Phoenix is a popular destination for snowbirds or "Northerners" who prefer the warm and dry winters of Arizona to the wet and cold ones of their hometowns. Many of these travelers come with their RVs, so there are plenty of services for them, and the sprawling layout of the cities makes for easier driving and more plentiful parking.

That’s not to say you have to drive everywhere though, as the Phoenix metro does have a public transportation network consisting of numerous buses and a light rail system. It can still be useful when you get a travel trailer rental in Tolleson as parking in the more populous parts of the metro area can be a challenge.

The Great Outdoors

South Mountain Park, a short drive away on Interstate 10, is one of the most popular places to go hiking in the Phoenix metro and is also one of the largest municipal parks in the country. While there are dozens of trails to choose from, it’s also home to Mystery Castle, a large house made from adobe, automobile parts, and various refuse that’s become a popular Phoenix landmark.

To beat the heat, make a trip over to Saguaro Lake a little bit east of Phoenix. This oasis in the desert is the perfect place to spend a hot afternoon with boat rentals (motorized and non-motorized) available from the marina there. The reservoir is also a popular spot for fishing for bass and trout if you have an Arizona fishing license.

Though not particularly close, you probably shouldn't get a motorhome rental in Tolleson without visiting Grand Canyon National Park. Driving there makes for a fairly long day trip, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience once you’re there. For a scenic adventure, take the Desert View Drive from Grand Canyon Village to the town of Desert View. It has some of the best overlooks of the famed canyon.

They also have full hookups for your RV rental from Tolleson, along with a heated pool, laundry facilities, a fitness center, and a dog run for your four-legged companion.

There’s no drinking water available and only a vault toilet, so you’ll need to come prepared, however, you can’t beat the beautiful scenery of the Tonto Forest and nearby Bartlett Lake. Tolleson also has two Walmart stores within its city limits, and with manager permission, you might be able to stay for a night or two at either of them.

Exploring the City of Tolleson

Tolleson is primarily a residential community, but when you rent an RV here, you’ll have easy access to all of the major attractions in the Phoenix metropolitan area. For great shopping and restaurants, check out the Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale; it’s the hub of tourist activity in the city and includes a hockey arena, a football stadium, a movie theater, outlet stores, and many great restaurants. However, if you’re a motorsports fan, you’ll want to make your way over to Avondale where the Phoenix International Raceway is located. It plays host to both NASCAR and IndyCar races each year along with several local events.

If you’re interested in Native American art and history, you’ll definitely need to make time for the Heard Museum. They have all sorts of exhibits ranging from sculpture gardens to paintings, and there are usually live performances on the weekends. There’s also the Bible Museum in Goodyear, which features a very unique set of exhibits including a collection of bibles from around the world and a hands-on look at the Dead Sea Scrolls. No matter you’re religious preferences, the museum is sure to spark your curiosity from a historical perspective.
