A part of the Frankenlust Township in eastern Michigan, the community of University Center sits perfectly near the shores of the Saginaw River and not too far from Saginaw Bay. When you rent an RV in University Center, you will be near the “upper mitten” area of the state, which will open up your world to some of the most beautiful natural and untouched landscapes you can find. With so much waiting to be explored in Michigan, you will have ample opportunities awaiting you in The Great Lake State.

There is not a public transportation system in the immediate area; however, if you find yourself wanting to explore nearby Bay City, there are several bus routes you can use to get around.

When you book an RV in Bay County, you will be able to explore thick, lush forests, cool and calming lakes, and the ever-welcoming local area. The natural beauty of Michigan knows no bounds, and you will be able to enjoy nature’s playground, unlike anything you’ve experienced when you book a campervan rental in University Center.

The Great Outdoors

Just a short drive south of town is the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge near Saginaw. At Shiawassee, you can travel on nearly 12 miles of trails as you wind yourself through hardwood forests and wetlands to get a true sense of the state. And if you’re visiting Shiawassee during the summer months, you can enjoy the 6.5-mile auto trail that winds through a section of the park. On top of the well-maintained trails, the refuge is a prime place for spotting various migratory birds and waterfowl. The refuge has long been used as a stop-over point for migratory birds, so no matter the season, you are sure to see some true avian beauty.

Just a short drive to the north of University Center is the Saginaw Bay at Bay City State Park near Bay City. This is a wonderful destination if you want to experience the beauty of the Great Lakes but don’t want to make a whole day’s journey. The Saginaw Bay is a drainage basin within Lake Huron; it actually forms the fingers and thumb of the “mitten." You can explore the hardwood forests, the largest freshwater marsh in the Great Lakes, and enjoy the sandy beaches that side up to the bay. You can enjoy kayaking through the marshes, exploring the network of paved trails, or just soaking up some sun.

If you’re looking for a fun day trip, then head northwest to the Roscommon State Forest Area near Harrison. Roscommon is known among the local wildlife enthusiasts as one of the top spots for truly immersing yourself in the Michigan wilderness. You’ll also be able to enjoy panoramic views of the gem that is Houghton Lake. At Roscommon, visitors have been known to indulge in hiking, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing, and even off-roading. No matter what recreational activity you are looking for, you’ll be able to spend the day doing something that you enjoy.

RV Parks

When you rent an RV, you may want to make sure you have a place to call your home-away-from-home for the night. Luckily enough, when you’re adventuring through Michigan, there are plenty of places near University Center worth considering.

Just to the northeast of town, along the shores of Saginaw Bay, is the Finn Road Park. At Finn Road, guests will have access to full hookups, your own grassy lawn, and a playground. Guests will also have access to a boat ramp to explore Saginaw Bay. This park is only open during the summer.

A quick drive to the northwest of town will take you to the Four Seasons RV Park. At Four Seasons, guests will have full hookups, restroom and shower facilities, and a camp store. Guests will also have access to a fishing lake and some recreational activities.

Explore the City

The best way to learn about a local area is to get out and explore it. There is so much to see and do in the Bay County area when you rent an RV that you will be amazed by just how full you can make your days.

On the south side of town is the Marshall M Fredericks Sculpture Museum. At the museum, you will see various styles of sculptures from numerous artists. You can enjoy the main gallery and see classic marble sculptures done by artist Marshall Fredericks or journey to other galleries to see works completed by other artists. You can also take a stroll through the botanical garden and enjoy the bronze sculptures that call the flowerbeds home.

North of town, along the Saginaw River, is the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum. You will be able to see the USS Edson up close and personal as you tour the battleship (with a reservation). The USS Edson served during the Vietnam War and earned several awards for its service. The museum showcases the history of the United States Navy over the course of the country’s history. The museum is also home to a classic car show that happens at the end of August every year, so if your travel plans line up, you could also see some truly unique vehicles.

If you’re traveling with little ones, a day at the Saginaw Children’s Zoo is a great way to entertain. You can get up close to some adorable penguins, kangaroos, rivers otters, and so much more. You can also enjoy the train ride and carousel during the warmer months.

Eventually, you will find yourself needing to restock and refuel your RV rental in University Center. Your best options are going to be just to the south along Route 84 or a little north, toward Bay City, along I-75.

When you’re staying in Michigan, you might want to get a taste of what the region has to offer. One of the most popular crops in the area are cherries, so sit down to a slice of fresh cherry pie to perfectly end your day.
