The U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) is a census-designated community located in El Paso County, Colorado. It is one of four armed forces bases in the region, the others being Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base and Schriever (formerly Falcon) Air Force Base. These four bases collectively are the largest employer in El Paso County.

RV rentals in El Paso County are guaranteed to be reliable vehicles perfectly suited to the Colorado countryside. There are some other towns and cities that might be of interest to those visiting the county. Larkspur was named after a species of purple flower that is native to the area. Castle Rock has a butte situated in its downtown core, which the town was named after. Monument was first named Henry's Station after one of the local settlers but was later renamed after Monument Creek and Monument Rock, slightly west of the town. Peyton was originally named Mayfield but the township had a post office and there was already another post office by that name, hence the name change. Manitou Springs is popular with tourists because many of its downtown stores and shops are only one story in height. Your U.S. Air Force Academy travel trailer rental is your ticket to exploring in comfort.

The Great Outdoors

Pikes Peak is an outdoor multi-use recreational reserve. Guests have the option of hiking to the peak or driving to it in their USAFA RV rental along the Pikes Peak Highway. There are three cold water reservoirs along the North Slope where anglers can try catching rainbow trout and several other trout species. The park also has a shuttle for transporting visitors from one of three midway parking lots (partially up the mountain highway) to the peak.

Beaver Creek State Wildlife Area is a managed wildlife preserve focusing on both plant and animal species in danger, as well as preserving the habitats that support the protected animals. Visitors to the park can enjoy fishing and hunting, boating, and off-road vehicles; the park is open year-round for those who enjoy snowmobiling. Skiing and snowshoeing are popular in the winter and summer visitors can hike, mountain bike, or go horseback riding. Camping is allowed and the park is a paradise for birders and photographers. Your USAFA motorhome rental is the perfect photography blind for capturing those breathtaking photos.

Mount Herman is a semi-tall mountain offering a short and moderately difficult hiking trail to outdoor enthusiasts. It is best attempted during the spring, summer, and fall, and sections of the trail can be steep. Dogs are welcome and hikers can expect to see a variety of tree and flower species along the way. From the peak, visitors can see several nearby towns on a clear day.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds close to USAFA. Some of these may have long-term tenants. Your USAFA RV trailer rental is perfectly suited to these and any other Colorado-based camping accommodation.

Falcon Meadow RV Campground is a rural and rustic family-friendly campground that is open all year round. The family-run operation opened in 1959. The park has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and a convenience store on site. Individual sites have full hookups and pull-through access. There is a central fire pit open to everyone and the park is pet-friendly. Some sites are for tent camping.

Garden of the Gods RV Resort is a modern RV park with daily, weekly, and monthly rates. Guests have access to the swimming pool and other on-site amenities such as a tv lounge and laundry facilities. Some individual sites have concrete pads and gravel walking surfaces, pull-through access, and full hookups. There are some cottages and bunkhouses for rent too.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to experience in this part of Colorado and some of it not for the faint of heart. One outdoor adventure company guides visitors on rock climbing expeditions up an immense red rock formation; another conducts “wolf walks” with real live wolves (who are socialized and very friendly), offering post-walk digital photographs taken by a professional. Some local tour companies offer guided cycling and horseback riding adventures and there are urban parks, museums, and a rodeo hall of fame.

After all of this activity, your appetite is bound to be worked up, but that is not a difficulty either. There is a variety of cuisines on hand, from American and Mexican menus to Japanese, Thai, Indian, and more. Most of the restaurants in the area are locally owned and operated so you can expect the food to be fresh. One fancifully named Lebanese restaurant (you will know it when you see it) is well decorated and has vegetarian and non-vegetarian entrees on its menu. Wait staff are knowledgeable and can assist with ordering; coffee and tea (chai tea if you desire) are prepared in traditional silver coffee/tea sets. Be sure to try the tikka lamb if you come here.

If quiet and solitude is your desire after such an active day, grab some groceries and head back to your USAFA luxury RV rental for a nice home-cooked meal. That is the wonder of being on vacation, there are no wrong choices as long as you know what you want. You can also order takeout from the restaurant you choose and enjoy your evening repast in your own lawn chair under a Colorado sky.
