One of the largest islands in the Penobscot Bay, Vinalhaven is a scenic island community about 12 miles from mainland Maine. Vinalhaven’s primary source of income is derived from the lobster industry, and it holds the rights to the largest fishing areas in the bay. In fact, Vinalhaven is a major supplier of lobsters to large cities, including New York, Boston, and Portland. In addition to the seafood industry, Vinalhaven is a significant granite quarrying center and provides stone for houses and buildings all over the country, including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Church of St. John the Devine in New York City, and the Washington Monument. Today, the town has many abandoned quarries that serve as swimming holes for tourists and locals. While you can only access Vinalhaven via an hour-long ferry ride, you’ll love the rest and relaxation (and fresh seafood) you’ll get when you book an RV rental in Vinalhaven.

The Great Outdoors

Lanes Island Preserve is a 43-acre conservation area accessible via a stone causeway. The preserve boasts 1.3 miles of nature trails across rolling coastal shrublands and ragged, rocky shorelines. Head here with the Vinalhaven campervan rental and marvel at a variety of wildflowers or sit back and observe waterfowl, including common eiders and Atlantic puffins. From 4,000 B.C. to colonial times, the island was home to Native American villages, but for the past ten years, the island, located near the mouth of the Royal River, has been a part of conservancy efforts.

Vinalhaven-North Haven Archipelago is comprised of six small islands: Big White, Sheep, Brimstone, Little Brimstone, Smith, and Big Garden. These islands, because of their rather remote nature, support an impressive array of birds. Though most of the islands, except Brimstone, do not have trails, they can still be explored with a bit of bushwhacking and determination. They are also nice locations for picnics and relaxing, isolated walks along the beach.

If you decide to get off the island and visit mainland Maine, you’ll definitely want to visit Camden Hills State Park. Spreading across 5,700 acres and featuring breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and lakes, the park has 30 miles of hiking trails, a well-maintained and equipped campground, and a large picnic area. One of the most popular hikes is the climb to the top of Mount Battie. From the summit, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the wooded hillsides, Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay, and the surrounding lakes.

RV Parks

Because of its isolated location, you won’t find very many RV parks in Vinalhaven. However, there are several that can accommodate your motorhome rental. Vinalhaven is not too far from Rockland, where you’ll find Megunticook Campground. There are primitive sites, sites with partial hookups, and sites with full hookups. While here, you can enjoy a seasonal swimming pool, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, and a playground. For your convenience, there’s also a laundromat and a bathhouse with hot showers. Watch for playful porpoises, soak in spectacular views of Penobscot Bay, or enjoy a local community event when you book an RV rental in Vinalhaven, Maine and stay at Megunticook Campground.

There’s also Greenlaw’s RV Park and Campground in Stonington. The small and peaceful campground is nestled amid fir trees and white birches and provides both open and wooded lots. Sites boast full hookups with either 20, 30, or 50 amp electrical service. On the grounds, there is a bathhouse with hot showers, Wi-Fi, a library book exchange, a pickleball court, a recreation room, and a ping pong table.

Exploring the City

You’ll have the opportunity to visit several lighthouses when you rent a motorhome in Vinalhaven. One lighthouse is Browns Head Light on the island’s northwest corner. Commissioned in 1832 to facilitate the transport of granite, Browns Head Light marks the popular seaway between Vinalhaven and North Haven. Though the grounds are open to the public, the lighthouse and the dwelling are closed. Nevertheless, it’s a great place to visit and soak in views of the area.

Traveling with children? Be sure to visit the Coastal Children’s Museum in Rockland. The ideal place for young children to explore, they can learn and discover through creative play and adult interaction. There are hands-on exhibits, puzzles, labyrinths, a wood workshop, and an art project room. There’s also an “Under the Sea” room with a tropical fish tank, a touch tank with marine life from the Gulf of Maine, an animal morphing exhibit, and more.

Not too far in Boothway, plant lovers can spend some time at the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden. Covering more than 248 acres in a coastal town, the gardens are made up of natural ecosystems including tidal waterfront on the Back River. The dramatic landscape features more than 300 native plant species and is the only coastal botanical garden on the Atlantic coast. It’s a beautiful place for green thumbs and plant novices alike.

Natural beauty, profound history, and unique culture; there’s something for everyone when you search for an RV in Knox County.
