The small town of Walden in northern Colorado is the county seat of Jackson County, and interestingly enough, the only incorporated municipality in the county too. Walden is far removed from the metropolitan areas of Colorado’s front range where the cities of Denver and Colorado Springs are both located. The town was established in the late 19th century, taking its name from the local postmaster.

This small one road-town has fewer than a thousand people that call it home. Its position way up in the Rocky Mountains generally keeps the temperature quite cool year-round. Stunning mountains surround the small alpine village and there are lots of nearby lakes to visit in the vicinity too. It might not be the most lively town you can visit in the Rockies but when you book an RV in Walden, all of northern Colorado awaits you on your next adventure.

Discover Walden

Explore the Outdoors

Colorado is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with thousands of parks, lakes, forests, mountains, and other recreation areas to make use of while you rent an RV in the Centennial State. Since there is not a whole lot going on in town, its best to hit the road in your Walden RV rental and see some of the nearby nature for yourself. State Forest State Park can be reached by taking CO-14 east towards Denver. The park lies in the Medicine Bow Range, an offshoot of the Rocky Mountains, and has a beautiful reservoir with boat ramps and lots of fish to catch. Additionally, there is a visitor’s center to help guide and educate curious visitors, and a massive campground that can accommodate you and your Walden camper rental.

Steamboat Lake State Park is another exceptional park in the mountains of Colorado, located in the opposite direction of State Forest State Park. Much like State Forest State Park, there is a visitor’s center, cabins, yurts, a large campground, a lake with a marina, and miles of hiking trails. Steamboat Lake State Park is surrounded by the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. Routt National Forest is the name for the part of the territory south of the Wyoming border, with well over one million acres to explore. The forest is named for Colorado’s first governor and includes a portion of the Continental Divide. There are some wonderful rivers flowing through the forest to raft or kayak down, as well as lots of mountain peaks to conquer. You could even go skiing in the winter time at Steamboat Ski Resort when you venture to Routt National Forest in your Walden motorhome rental.

When you’re in the area you simply must take a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the most well-known parks in the entire country. Over four and a half million people enter the park each year so you know it must be pretty special to pull that kind of crowd. The park is best known for its elegant mountain peaks, lofty vistas with spectacular views, and a system of hiking trails that weave their way through the park. You can easily find camping sites for your Walden RV rental if you feel the urge to stay a few days more and it is safe to say you most likely will.

RV Parks to Visit

Colorado is an outdoors hub with unparalleled beauty, so it is only fitting that there are plenty of campgrounds located throughout the state. The remote stretches around Walden even have a few suitable options for you and your Walden motorhome rental to stay overnight. Lake John Resort has cabins, tent camping, and, of course, RV camping spots along the lake for restful sleep and excellent views. The lake is a fantastic place to fish so remember to bring your fishing pole and tackle box.

Hoover Roundup Motel & RV Park is actually located in Walden itself, making it a decent option to stay if you enjoy walking and seeing small towns. The park has large RV camping sites with internet and quite a few amenities.

Big Creek Lakes Campground is one of many public campgrounds located in the nearby national forest, but there are many state parks and recreation areas with camping that you can head to. State Forest State Park and Steamboat Lake State Park both have fabulous lakefront camping for you to check out too.

City Sightseeing

Don’t get big expectations when it comes to exploring the town on your trip, because there is very little to do in Jackson County’s only incorporated town. The area can be quite remote so heading east to more populated areas might be your best bet when you rent an RV in Walden and feel like seeing the city. The Steamboat Lake State Park and State Forest State Park visitor centers are technically attractions that act as mini-museums. They are operated by knowledgeable park rangers who have a passion for the ecosystem and its wonderful wildlife.

North Park Pioneer Museum pays homage to the history of North Park, the name given to the area by locals. This small but incredible museum is packed with memorabilia and photographs from the past, all of which has a story to tell. The three-story museum is actually run by descendants of the original pioneers that first settled in the valley over a century ago.

If you enjoy winter recreation, Steamboat Ski Resort is a world-class facility over in the previously mentioned Routt National Forest. You can ski, snowboard, go tubing, or enjoy the alpine village at the base of the resort which has lots of tasty food, craft beers, and shopping boutiques.
