Waldron is a small village in the south of Michigan state, close to the state line with Ohio. The village was originally named South Wright, but changed to honor Henry Waldron, just so long as he paid for the schoolhouse bell!

Located directly south of Jackson and less than a one hour drive east to Toledo, OH, this is an excellent place to visit and explore the outdoors. Book an RV in Waldron, and you will have a great base for exploring the Great Lakes area.

The local landscape of rolling hills and farmland make it perfect for sightseeing when you rent a motorhome in Waldron.

Discover Waldron

The Great Outdoors

Only a few miles northeast of Waldron is where you’ll find the Lake Hudson State Recreation Area. The park is particularly known for the lack of light pollution in the surrounding area and was recognized as the first United States dark-sky preserve. Fishing is also a popular past-time at the lake, and it’s regularly stocked with walleye and muskellunge to supplement the other species such as bass, perch, and catfish. Boating is allowed on the lake, but there is a strict no-wake policy, meaning that boat speeds must be kept very low to prevent creating of a wake. Within the forest surrounding the lake are numerous hiking trails, picnic areas, and a swimming beach. There is a campground for your RV rental that provides electrical connections and water by a hand-pump, but little else.

Just over the state line in Indiana is Pokagon State Park, which is well worth a visit in your RV rental from Waldron. The park features Snow Lake to the north and Lake James on its west and south sides with various areas of wetlands throughout the park. Along with more than ten miles of hiking trails, one of the parks winter features is its toboggan run. The quarter-mile track allows speeds of up to 40 miles an hour and is a hit with thrill seekers! There is an abundance of wildlife to spot, fishing is allowed in the well-stocked lakes, and the kids will love the variety of activities provided to keep them amused. There is a campground with electric hookups and a store for daily essentials.

A little further to travel in your luxury RV rental from Waldron, but worth the effort is Waterloo State Recreation Area. It’s one of the largest state parks in Michigan covering around 21,000 acres, includes 11 lakes and 50 miles of hiking trails. In a park so large, you’ll find plenty to do, including fishing, boating, and swimming in the lakes, and of course watching for the huge variety of wildlife. The Waterloo-Pinkney Trail, stretching 36 miles runs through the park and connects with the Pinkney Recreation Area just to the northeast. Don’t forget to visit the Gerald E.Eddy Discovery Center to learn about the parks geology and habitats.

RV Parks

The awesomely named Loveberry’s Funny Farm Campground is a very short drive west in your rental RV and would be perfect for a family vacation. This family-run campground has been built for fun. The kids will love the swimming pond, and the regular activities arranged just for them. There is a staff member that has just one job, and that is to entertain the kids! For your RV, there are pull-thru sites with full hookups if required, plus washrooms and a camp store.

Built at the side of South Sand Lake, the Gateway Park Campground has all the amenities you could wish for and regular entertainment. Along with 99 full hook-up sites, WiFi and TV, the site is all-inclusive, which means all the organised events are free to attend. They simply ask for a small donation towards the costs and give any profit to a local charity. Throw in around 20 different on-site activities and a heated swimming pool, and it’s bound to be a hit with the kids.

Exploring the City

Being such a small place, there are few amenities in Waldron. A few miles north is the slightly larger town of Hudson, which has some fast-food restaurants and diners, while Hillsdale to the northwest is the closest large town.

Hudson is home to two museums that are worth paying a visit to. The William G. Thompson House Museum and Gardens is a Queen Anne home built in 1890 which is full of artifacts collected by the family over three generations. The home is decorated in Victorian style and on display is antique porcelain and glass collections, oriental art and much more.

Nearby is the Hudson Museum, which takes the visitor through a historical journey of the Hudson area. Collections include memorabilia from the Civil War, WW1, WW2, and local artifacts. A visit to the museum will give you a great insight into life in the area since the first settlers.
