Off the beaten path between Spokane and Boise is the town of Weippe, Idaho. It’s just east of the Nez Perce Reservation and doesn’t see too many tourists thanks to its location away from the main highways. There’s much to discover when you get a travel trailer rental in Weippe, though. The Weippe Prairie is where the members of Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery nearly starved to death after emerging from Montana’s Bitterroot Mountains in 1805. Weippe is rich in Native American history too, with the Nez Perce tribe having saved the lives of the Corps members by clothing and feeding the ragged explorers.
When you book an RV in Weippe, you can see Idaho’s wilder regions. The town sits close to the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, which in combination with the Frank Church-River of No Return and Gospel Hump Wildernesses, make up the largest roadless area in the lower 48 states. Whether you’re a history buff, a hardcore outdoor adventurer, or just someone who enjoys taking part in small-town life, you’re going to love getting a camper rental in Weippe.
Those wanting to follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark can take a journey along the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail. The route is more of an idea than a designated path at this point as the explorers floated down the Clearwater River rather than hiking along any trail. Most who take part in the journey do it as a scenic drive along Highway 12, which parallels the Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers.
The Clearwater and Snake Rivers also provide fantastic recreational opportunities during the summer months, including kayaking, fishing, and rafting adventures. Most of the guided trips leave from Orofino, making it a popular gathering point for outdoorsy types.
If you’d prefer to get out on the trail, the Lolo National Forest has dozens of excellent hikes. The Lolo Peak Trail will take you to the summit of a nearly 10,000-foot-tall mountain with expansive views of the Idaho Panhandle. There’s also the West Fork Butte Lookout, an actual 20th-century fire lookout that watches over the Bitterroot Mountains.
The gorgeous mountains of northern Idaho make for a fantastic backdrop when you rent an RV in this scenic region of Idaho. Fortunately, there are a number of RV parks and campgrounds not far from town. Timberline Café and RV Park is just outside of Weippe and has several spaces that can accommodate larger RVs. It’s really just a parking lot behind a restaurant, so there’s not much in the way of amenities, but you can’t beat the location next to Grasshopper Creek.
Another option is Kamiah/Clearwater River KOA, a little less than an hour's drive to the south of Weippe near the town of Kamiah. It’s a full-service park with electrical, water, and sewer hookups along with a swimming pool and dog park to enjoy when you get a motorhome rental in Weippe.
More rustic accommodations can be found just inside the Lolo National Forest at Lolo Creek Campground and Recreation Area, about 20 miles southeast of Weippe. The only amenities at this mountain campground are drinking water and vault toilets, so come prepared to rough it.
If you want to learn more about the town’s history when you get a camper rental in Weippe, you could start in the basement of its library, at the Weippe Discovery Center. It’s little more than a medium-sized room, but it’s filled with great information about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Nez Perce tribe. Reading all of the exhibits will probably take less than an hour, and it’s a great place to learn about the area. The Clearwater Historical Museum is nearby in Orofino and has similar displays, but is a little larger if you’re up for the trip.
Besides the Timberline Café and RV Park, there aren’t too many dining options in Weippe. For that, you’ll need to head down to Kamiah, which has a nice selection of American favorites like burgers, pizza, and Tex-Mex. Nearby Orofino has similar choices, with a Chinese restaurant or two thrown into the mix.
If you or anyone in your family is an animal lover, be sure to check out the Wolf Education and Rehabilitation Center in Winchester, a little over an hour's drive to the west of Weippe. The center promotes sustainable relationships with the majestic and often misunderstood creatures, allowing visitors to view them while maintaining a distance that keeps them in their wild state.
