The city of Wharton was officially founded in 1902, but it can trace its modern roots back to 1838 when the area first became part of a mail route. When you book an RV in Wharton you can drive along the old mail route, seeing the landscape that was once covered with crops that settlers needed to survive. Of course the town has changed heavily since then, but many of the buildings in town have been restored to reflect their early architecture.

When you rent a motorhome in Wharton you won’t be far from Houston and Victoria, which are both larger cities in the southeastern part of Texas. Also nearby to the town is the Gulf of Mexico, which was one of the major draws to early settlers moving to the area. Unlike the western half of Texas, the region surrounding Wharton is a bit more tropical and easier to grow crops in, thanks to large bodies of water in the area.

Discover Wharton

The Great Outdoors

The most obvious outdoor attraction in the area is the Gulf of Mexico, which is southeast of Wharton. The most convenient highway to take you there will bring you through Matagorda, and if you carry on that highway it runs into Jetty Park, a pleasant place to spend the day with sweeping ocean views. Jetty Park is mostly accessible on foot, so be prepared to stretch your legs while you enjoy an oceanside stroll.

Other parks near the Gulf of Mexico include the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge and the Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area, which are located near to one another. It is easy to explore both when you have a camper rental from Wharton, and they both offer many miles of hiking trails to explore. Both parks are dog-friendly, so long as they are kept on a leash, and have many benches interspersed on the trails that make for nice places to stop and rest.

The Colorado River runs directly through Wharton, after starting in northwest Texas, and continues on to merge with the Gulf of Mexico. With an RV rental from Wharton it is possible to follow the course of the river, exploring the many different landscapes that it runs through. The river is also nice for cooling off in on a hot day. For a nice mix of water and hiking near to town, the Brazos Bend State Park may be one of the better choices. This park has a few different options for swimming, isn’t far from Wharton, and includes the George Observatory which is a great way to learn about astronomy.

RV Parks

RV camping is very popular in Texas, which is a nice perk for guests who have a motorhome rental from Wharton. Surrounding the nearby Houston are many RV parks that guests can choose from. The diverse RV parks around Houston offer many different amenities, many of which overlap between the parks. They all have full hookups, and most RV parks in the area have concrete pads and pull through sites for convenience. Some of the parks go even further and offer golf cart rentals, onsite propane sales, pools, yard games, and other entertainment options.

For guests who prefer to avoid the busy city, or perhaps want to stay closer to Wharton when they rent an RV, there is a Walmart Supercenter in town that they can inquire about parking at. Be sure to talk with management before parking overnight to ensure they are okay with it. This type of camping of course offers no amenities, so be sure to check out an RV park if you want special amenities during your stay.

Exploring the City

Being a town whose creation was rooted in an influx of immigrants from many countries, it is no surprise that modern-day Wharton has many diverse food options dotting its streets. Guests to the town can find everything from Chinese to Mexican, Japanese, German, Texas style, American diners, cafes, and more. There is no shortage of fast food options also, so after you find the best RV rental in Wharton there should be little trouble finding the best food options as well.

At the south end of town is Dinosaur Park, which contains a large statue of a dinosaur. The park is a fun place to stop for a rest and a photo, and is one of the easiest ways to explore the Colorado River as it runs through town. Dinosaur Park is dog-friendly, so long as you keep your four-legged friends on a leash. Just down river from Dinosaur Park is Riverfront Park, another great option for exploring the Colorado River and enjoying a nice stroll.

In order to learn about the rich history of the town and region, guests are advised to visit the Wharton City Historical Museum on the north end of town. This museum is filled with local artifacts and plenty of information, and right next door is the 20th Century Technology Museum if you are looking for something a bit more modern. Both museums have many events throughout the year, so be sure to check out their calendar of events if you are seeking something specific when you have your travel trailer rental from Wharton, TX.
