High up in the majestic Rocky Mountains that dominate much of the western United States, lies the small mountain town of Winter Park, Colorado. This charming resort area can be found a little more than an hour’s drive west from Denver, or a two-hour train ride on the Ski Train offered by Amtrak to shuttle people back and forth from the city. The town’s nickname is “Colorado’s highest”, but in reality, the town of Winter Park is one of the highest incorporated towns in the country.

There is much to do in this recreation paradise when you book an RV in Winter Park, like mountain bike, hike, or go camping in the magnificent forests and mountains nearby. In wintertime, Winter Park, as you might have guessed, is even busier, with throngs of visitors pouring in to take part in some world-class skiing and snowboarding in Colorado’s fresh powdery snow.

There are several other fun mountain towns nearby so do not be afraid to venture off in your Winter Park camper rental to fully revel in the magic of the Rocky Mountains. No matter the time of year, you are in for a real treat when you select this amazing place to be your next vacation destination.

Discover Winter Park

Explore the Outdoors

It is a bit tricky to figure out where to go and what to see when you first rent an RV in Winter Park. The town itself is lovely but the region is teeming with exquisite scenery and ample space to hike and camp. Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests are comprised of several wilderness areas, over a million acres of land, and numerous campgrounds for you to stay with your Winter Park camper rental. The forest straddles the continental divide and is home to migratory birds and a variety of other kinds of graceful wildlife.

You can head to Golden Gate Canyon State Park with your Winter Park RV rental and enjoy its top-notch facilities. The park is located south of Boulder and has hundreds of camping spots, a visitor center for all your information needs, and picnic areas scattered throughout the area. Prominent geological formations appear on the skyline and guests can utilize over 30 miles of trails to find magnificent vistas overlooking incredible valleys and gorges below. You can ride horses and use a mountain bike on the trails while exploring the park when you rent an RV and head to one of Colorado’s best state parks too. State Forest State Park has an interesting and confusing name but there is nothing confusing about how breathtaking the layout of the land can be. This high mountain park surrounds the North Michigan Creek Reservoir where there are several boat launches, swimming areas, and beaches for park goers to use. State Forest State Park also has a visitor center much like the one at Golden Gate Canyon State Park, and hundreds of tent camping spaces, RV camping spots, cabins, and yurts for people to stay in overnight.

Rocky Mountain National Park is an absolute gem that cannot be overlooked when you rent an RV anywhere in Colorado. The park welcomes millions of people yearly to see its stunning mountain peaks and lush valleys riddled with wildflowers of every color imaginable. Guests can conquer mountain peaks towering over 14,000 feet and hike to hidden reservoirs nestled into the mountainside away from civilization. The backcountry yields more natural treasures, like stunning waterfalls that cascade from high atop rocky cliffs and mountainsides. It is highly advisable to bring your Winter Park motorhome rental to Rocky Mountain National Park no matter the time of year as it is easily one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

RV Parks to Visit

There are not many private campgrounds near Winter Park, but there are several rustic parks to accommodate you and your Winter Park camper rental, especially in the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests. St. Louis Creek Campground, Idlewild Campground, and Robbers Roost Campgrounds can all be found in the forest nearby, in the middle of heavenly natural areas. Willow Creek Group Campground is to the north on the Willow Creek Reservoir, with a wide-open dog park, swimming areas, and ample space to fish or boat around. There are other campgrounds in the surrounding area too, but no high-end, upscale RV resorts like one might find near Denver or Fort Collins.

City Sightseeing

The small town of Winter Park is mostly a hub for outdoor adventuring, so lots of tour operators, rafting guides, mountain biking rental shops, and other recreation-based businesses can be found in town. The Winter Park Visitor Center is a valuable resource for first-time visitors to the mountain town, with pamphlets, maps, and information about the area as well as a list of upcoming events.

The Elizabeth Kurtak Art Gallery has lots of original artworks on display from noted local artist Elizabeth Kurtak. This lovely gallery is an awesome place to see gorgeous paintings of Colorado's most epic landscapes. The Cozens Ranch House Museum is a fabulous museum in an old home built by original settlers in the area. The museum has a wealth of information about the first pioneers that set foot in the valley, and the ranching practices that kept the community prosperous for many years. The main attraction in town is definitely the Winter Park Mountain Resort which is home to hundreds of trails and chairlifts ferrying skiers and snowboarders up the mountain to enjoy some world-class slopes in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. In the summertime, the resort is a popular mountain biking area, and throughout the year there are live concerts and other fun festivals held on the resort grounds.
