Right in the heart of Wisconsin, you can book an RV in Wisconsin Rapids and start planning your dream vacation immediately. This friendly and inviting community has been around since settlers began to build homesteads in the area back in the 1830s. At one point in time, the town was split into two different places on either side of the Wisconsin River, Centralia and Grand Rapids. Before that, however, the natives called the area “Ahdawagam” which means “two-sided rapids” in English.

As you can probably see, the raging Wisconsin River divides the town right down the middle, serving as a main component and central feature. On either side of the river, you can find delightful river walks where people can walk, jog, or ride bicycles to get around town in a safe and relaxing way. Beautiful public parks are interspersed throughout the town, offering people a variety of places to enjoy the warm weather in the summer and truly appreciate the aesthetic appeal of the city.

Wisconsin Rapids is around two hours’ drive north of Madison, the state capital. It is centrally located and convenient for planning your trip, and many of the state's incredible parks, forests, beaches, lakes, and cities are well within driving range when you rent an RV in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Great Outdoors

If there is one thing Wisconsin has in spades, it is fantastic natural beauty in the forms of parks, recreation areas, campgrounds, and hiking trails. The Badger State is a veritable outdoor paradise that you can travel through and explore as you see fit with your Wisconsin Rapids motorhome rental.

Buckhorn State Park is nearby and is a dreamy place where you can go swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and hiking. The park lies on a peninsula that juts out into the middle of Castle Rock Lake, one of the state’s most scenic lakes. The Wisconsin River also flows adjacent to the park, so there is no limit to the fun you can have on its sandy shores, whether you feel like reading a book, having a campfire, looking at the stars, or camping out in your Wisconsin Rapids RV rental by owner.

Devils Lake State Park is a little bit farther south. Despite its name, this amazing park south of Baraboo is one of the more visually pleasing places you can visit in Wisconsin, known for its glacial lakes, marshes, and towering quartzite bluffs that loom above the lake. The cliffs at the park are a hotspot for rock climbing, while other visitors choose to spend their time swimming, fishing, or kayaking around the wide-open lake. Camping and hiking are also options when you head to Devils Lake State Park, complete with campgrounds, visitor centers, and a nature center where you can learn about the natural history of Wisconsin.

Rib Mountain State Park is in the opposite direction, found to the north by the city of Wausau. The park’s main feature is Rib Mountain, a monadnock that is 2,000 feet high and nearly one and a half billion years old. Eroded by glaciers, this prominent but isolated peak is home to Granite Peak Ski Area, one of the first of its kind in the United States.

If you want to venture off even farther from your starting point, the shores of Lake Superior to the north are an ideal place to bring your Wisconsin Rapids camper rental. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a fabulous place to spend your vacation, with one of the most pristine stretches of coastline in the entire country. There are epic sandstone caves lining the rugged lakeshore, many of which you can canoe or kayak through. On top of that, the park is full of historic lighthouses and old-growth forests unimpeded by human interference. There are dozens of small islands you can visit when you head to this magical stretch of land in northern Wisconsin.

City Attractions

Few towns have more pride in their own history than Wisconsin Rapids, a fact that is on full display when you visit this wonderful place. The town historically was built off the back of its prosperous paper producing industry, and you can see this when you visit the Wisconsin River Papermaking Museum. The institution is housed in a glorious brick mansion on the banks of the Wisconsin River, with breathtaking woodwork and fantastic details. You can tour the facility with knowledgeable guides who work on a volunteer basis and learn about the papermaking process, the history of the city, the first settlers, and the mighty river that made it all possible.

South Wood County Historical Museum continues the trend, helping guests dive deep into the past to better understand Wisconsin Rapids and the entire Wood County as a whole. The building itself is also a converted brick mansion built in the 19th century, a common sight in a city filled with incredible Victorian homes. There are lots of unique artifacts and photographs packed into this smaller house, with lots of fascinating exhibits concerning the cranberry industry of central Wisconsin, and a variety of time periods with furniture, household items, artwork, and more.

The Wisconsin Rapids Municipal Zoo is a nice place to spend a few hours or a whole day, especially if you are traveling with kids. This family-friendly destination is on the smaller side, but full of exotic animals and a petting zoo where children can feed the pigs and goats. You can walk through the zoo and enjoy beautifully landscaped gardens and walkways, and a menagerie of lovely animals, truly a memorable experience.
