The little community of Wyandotte sits in the northeastern corner of Oklahoma, near the border of Missouri and Kansas, and not far from the city of Joplin, Missouri. It’s an incredible location, far from the hustle and bustle of metropolises like Tulsa and Oklahoma City. While few tourists consider visiting the vast rural expanses of the state, it’s a place of immense beauty and is full of opportunity for outdoor recreation thanks to the Neosho River, which was dammed to create the massive Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees not far from town.
It’s also the tribal headquarters for the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma, one of three dozen tribes who make their home within the state. The primary reason that visitors come to the little town of Wyandotte is to gamble on the reservation. Both the Indigo Sky Casino and River Bend Casino are located nearby and are popular with Oklahoma residents and tourists as far away as Texas.
Choosing a motorhome rental in Wyandotte is one of the best ways to explore nature when traveling through northeastern Oklahoma. Wyandotte sits at the confluence of the Neosho and Spring rivers, which makes it a very popular spot for fishing, particularly for bass and walleye (be sure to get the proper state license first). Some of the best spots to catch them can be found at the nearby Twin Bridges and Honey Creek recreation areas.
There’s also the Bernice Area at Grand Lake State Park, which has a couple of good walking trails to stroll, especially if you’re looking for a place to exercise a four-legged friend. The park also has a nature center where you can learn more about the flora and fauna that make their home in the Wyandotte area.
If you’re hoping to hit the links when you rent an RV here, check out some of the fantastic golf courses near Grove. Many of them are just off the Neosho River and have some amazing views in addition to being challenging courses.
As with most things in Oklahoma, RV parks can be pretty spread out. One of the closest places to park your rig when you book an RV in Wyandotte is Twin Bridges Area at Grand Lake State Park. Their sites have electrical hookups, fire rings, and volleyball courts, but most campers come for the excellent fishing. There’s even a boat ramp, supply shop, and a fish processing station available.
Almost across the Missouri state line is Whispering Woods RV Park, which is actually the closest dedicated RV park when you get a travel trailer rental in Wyandotte. It’s run by the Indigo Sky Casino and is located directly behind it. Sites feature hookups along with access to campground laundry facilities, showers, a swimming pool, and an outdoor fireplace area. If you’re gambling at Indigo Sky, this is definitely a place to consider parking your rig.
Quite some distance away, on the Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, is Lakewood Village Mobile Home and RV Park. The RV spaces at this 55+ park come with full hookups along with some fantastic views of the waterfront. This park is popular with long-term vacationers and retirees, but you should have no trouble finding a spot to park your Wyandotte camper rental.
Wyandotte is a very small town, so you’ll almost certainly need to drive over to some of the nearby towns if you want to find any attractions. Fortunately, the Wyandotte area sits along the historic Route 66. If you’re a gearhead of any sort, you’re going to love the Route 66 Vintage Iron Motorcycle Museum in the town of Miami. They’ve got old Harleys, Indians, a couple of Kawasakis, and a great exhibit on Evel Knievel that is sure to bring back some memories if you’re of the “Easy Rider” generation. But even if you’re not, you’re sure to appreciate this wonderful museum as a fascinating slice of Americana.
Another historical site on the Route 66 trail is Coleman Theater, a 1920’s movie palace that’s been beautifully restored. Nowadays, it’s used for stage plays, but even if there aren’t any productions during your visit, it’s worth taking a tour of the extraordinary facilities.
One of the best things about being on Route 66 is the sheer volume of great antique shops and curio stores to browse through. One of the best is the famed Copeland Switch in the nearby town of Grove. While you’ll almost certainly find something that strikes your fancy and serves as an excellent souvenir of your trip with the Wyandotte RV rental, it’s perfectly acceptable to just browse around for an hour or more.
