Introduction

Arkansas River - Pool 5 is located just 10 miles west of Tucker and six miles east of Redfield, Arkansas. Pool 5 is best accessible from Pine Bluff and offers excellent bank fishing opportunities for anglers looking to haul in large-sized smallmouth and spotted bass.

Arkansas River - Pool 5 also offers visitors a chance to spends a few nights in their RVs enjoying the picturesque natural beauty and plenty of recreational activities managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Pool 5 extends upstream for over twenty miles and has about a 50-mile shoreline making it a truly vast body of water with plenty of backwaters that make for ideal fishing spots. Several small creeks also enter this pool and you can even spot several waterfalls during the rainy season.

Apart from the rich fishing grounds and scenic beauty, outdoor enthusiasts can also partake in hiking, boating, and hunting when in-season. The nearby Tar Camp Park also offers RV camping facilities while other parks in the area offer access to boat ramps, picnic areas, group shelters and much more.

Transportation

Driving

Arkansas River - Pool 5 is located about 10 miles west of Tucker and it is most likely that you will be arriving at Pool 5 by driving up from Pine Bluff. The roads are well-maintained and getting to Pool 5 lock and dam is fairly easy even for large-sized RVs and Motorhomes.

To get to the campground from Redfield, Arkansas, take State Route 46 east to State Route 365. From here take a left and turn right on the next block. Drive for about four miles to reach your destination.

Tar Camp Park Campground

Tar Camp campground has a large campground that offers water and electric hookups for RV campers looking to spend a few days and nights in a picturesque riverside location.
Tar Camp campground offers more than fifty campsites, most of which are paved and come with water and electric hookups. Each campsite has a movable lamp post and a grill. Picnic tables and campfire rings are also available at each campsite. Tenting sites are also available as well as two large group picnic shelters.
The campsites are river facing and quite close to the water's edge but still provide ample shade and privacy while offering simply majestic views of the landscape.
Paved roads lead to the various campsites that are quite spacious and a fair distance apart resulting in a private and altogether luxurious stay.

Off-Season

Photography

An abundance of wildlife, calm river waters and dense surrounding forests make for some genuinely awesome photography. Take your phones and cameras along and make sure to capture some fantastic snaps of breathtaking sunsets, diverse bird species, and the beauty of the surrounding forests to show your friends back home. The varied landscape, rich flora and fauna, as well as great weather during spring and autumn, make for some truly epic pictures, not soon to be forgotten.

Picnicking

They are few things more relaxing and enjoyable than having a river-side picnic with family and friends. The beautiful scenery, gorgeous weather, and of course great people make for some memorable moments. Both Tar Camp and Wrightsville have a designated day-time picnic area equipped with picnic tables. Playgrounds are also available for your children to have some fun while you enjoy other recreational activities. Group picnic shelters are also open on a reservation basis only.

Hunting

Arkansas River offers some of the best fishing and hunting grounds in all of the U.S. as these rich river waters can support abundant wildlife. During hunting season you can dwell deep into the woodlands and hunt down deer, wild turkey, and ducks. Duck hunting is especially popular near Arkansas River - Pool 5 and the greater Pine Bluff region. Make sure you are carrying your hunting license with you at all times. Also, adhere to all the rules and regulations specified in the area.

Hiking

The area surrounding Arkansas River - Pool 5 comprises acres upon acres of dense woodlands, rolling hills, quaint riverside towns, and pristine lake shoreline. This offers plenty of hiking opportunities for keen outdoor enthusiasts that want to take on the wild and explore these beautiful surroundings. Unmarked and marked hiking trails are available at Dam Site No. 5 Park and Tar Camp Park.

Fishing

Arkansas River had always been a renowned fishing destination for anglers but the popularity of fishing here only began to increase after the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation Project that led to the development of 12 locks and dams to tame this once raging river. Today, a series of large-sized pools is what makes Arkansas River and this has proven beneficial in many ways especially for keen anglers. The vast well-nourished reservoir waters support a healthy population of giant bass, crappie, catfish and bream.

The best fishing spots around Arkansas River - Pool 5 include the Brodie Bend, an old oxbow, Case Bar Cutoff, and Warings Bend.

Boating

With over 6,600 surface acres of water and 50 miles of shoreline to explore not bring your boats, kayaks, or canoes out to this vast body of water would simply be a shame. The placid river water and non-threatening currents make for a peaceful and relaxing boating experience. Many visitors also prefer to bring along larger sized boats so that they can get to the more remote backwaters that are often teeming with bass and a variety of other fish species. Tar Camp Park and Wrightsville Park both have public boat ramps available for visitors to use.
