Transportation

Driving

Atlanta Motor Speedway officials have got navigation to the event site down to a fine art. If you come from the north on Highway 19 or 41, you’ll turn onto Speedway Boulevard and into one of the directed parking lots. If you arrive from the south, the main entrance or blue lot are your options for entry. Highway 20 traffic will either be in the Orange or Weaver lots.

As you’re driving, you can get live traffic reports specific to Atlanta Motor Speedway, making sure you know precisely what to expect when you get closer to your destination.

Parking areas

Parking at Atlanta Motor Speedway has traditionally been free for all vehicles of all sizes. Where you park depends on whether you arrive from Highway 20, or north or south from Highway 19 or 41. Officials will be there to guide your way.

If you’re camping at the event site, then you will be guided to the appropriate area, depending on where you booked your campsite. Prepare for delays if you are trying to exit the venue immediately after an event is over.

Public Transportation

If you have decided to camp offsite and make your way to Atlanta Motor Speedway yourself, then you’re not short of options. You can arrange to jump aboard the ride-share bus owned by the venue or organize public transport or a ride share service yourself. The official bus allows food and drink and even has TVs.

Where to stay

Onsite

There are options galore when it comes to camping at Atlanta Motor Speedway. You can be amongst all the action in the infield, overlook the speedway, or choose from both unreserved and reserved spaces on the outskirts. There is also a family area for those who want to sleep somewhere quiet. All RV camping spots allow one RV and one car or small vehicle.

Most sites boast sewer, electricity, and water hookups, and allow the use of generators with exhausts. Pets on leashes are also welcome. If you want to get to the motor action quickly, you can jump aboard the tram stops which are conveniently near all campsites.

Nearby

If you like to get a full night’s sleep without the noises of other campers, then you may prefer to sleep offsite. Even in the few miles or so surrounding the speedway site, there are plenty of other privately owned campgrounds to suit your needs.

Some are within a ten-minute drive of the event venue, while others are closer to Hampton and Atlanta. Atlanta Motor Speedway also has preferred accommodation partners, which means you may be able to stay nearby at a discounted rate.

Getting around

Even though the speedway venue spans over 850 acres, you won’t be expected to cover that on foot. There is a tram service that operates daily throughout many different events, with 12 stops around the venue. This tram also takes you to and from campgrounds and is available to make up for not allowing dirt bikes, ATVs, golf carts, skateboards, and other personal vehicles.

What to pack

Clothing

What you pack can depend on the time of year you intend on visiting Atlanta. If you’re there for a headline act, such as NASCAR, then bring plenty of warm layers. Temperatures may remain low even during the spring.

To cover all bases, pack clothing you can add to and still look the part of a race fan. Rain jackets, weatherproof footwear, and sunhats are all must-have items.

Gear

It can be hard to know what to bring to such a well-established venue, but there are a few must-have items for racing events. You may bring a cooler meeting your event’s recommended size, and even a grandstand cushion to keep you comfortable. Alcohol is allowed, but no glass.

Bring both cash and credit since concession stands only accept cash, or make use of the many ATMs on site for convenience. You will also need ear protection, sun protection, and binoculars. Your visit can be even more comfortable if you bring a portable radio and a camera to get your favorite racers’ photos.

Health & Safety

Weather protection is crucial to keep you safe during your visit to Atlanta Motor Speedway. Bring a sunhat, sunscreen, and sunglasses, but an umbrella safely stowed in your RV may come in handy as well. A personal first aid kit and medical supplies you need for your holiday are must-have items too.

If you bring young children with you, you’re more than welcome to make use of the nursing and diaper room in the guest services booth underneath the grandstand. Remember ear protection for the littles.

Where to eat

Cooking

Atlanta Motor Speedway is one place you don’t want to forget to bring your camp stove. You are allowed to use your onboard RV gas cooker in the campsites around the track. You can also use a generator with an exhaust for any other cooking appliances.

Low on supplies? Make a quick trip into Hampton two miles away to stock up at the local food mart. Everything is conveniently close.

Restaurants

Not everyone is a camp stove cooking master, and if you want someone else to prepare dinner for a change, wander into Hampton. There are steakhouses, cafes, and fast food outlets to tantalize your taste buds. Most eateries are ideal for families, couples, and individuals. You won’t go hungry on your holiday, that’s for sure.

Vendors

There are over 20 concession stands throughout Atlanta Motor Speedway to make sure no one goes hungry (or thirsty). You can grab something to eat, sit down, and soak up the atmosphere. These stands are largely cash-only facilities, so make sure you’ve stopped at one of the many ATMs first.

Safety

Security

Atlanta Motor Speedway takes their patrons’ safety and security seriously. RV-goers are asked to leave chairs and large items in their RV if they are going to take a seat in the grandstand. Weapons are also not allowed on AMS property. Don’t be offended if security officials ask to check your bag. Smile and thank them for keeping everyone safe.

Weather

Weather throughout the year in Atlanta can be quite mild, but spring storms are not unusual. When major events such as NASCAR are in town, temperatures usually range in the 40s. Pay attention to the weather forecast before you travel. You can then prepare for any eventuality, both on the road and when you reach your destination.

Medical

If you need a helping hand with an injury or accident, then make your way to the information centers encompassing the AMS venue. Trained professionals will be able to help with any small injuries. However, for anything more serious, dial 9-11. Alternatively, there is both a medical center and pharmacy in the small city of Hampton nearby.
