Located just outside Lucas, Kentucky, this state park is a must for your next RV adventure. You'll have endless opportunities for outdoor recreation in a unique grassland landscape. From hiking and fishing to birding and horseback riding, Barren River Lake State Park offers a variety of outdoor adventure.

The treeless grassland views of Barren Lake State Park are breathtaking, showcasing a 146-foot-high dam that houses Barren River Lake. You will enjoy soaking in the cool air while being surrounded by unique plant life, including wildflowers, ferns, and deciduous trees. There are numerous species of birds in the park like flycatchers, warblers, Bald Eagles, and Sandhill Cranes. Avid outdoorsy folks will love orienteering, a sport in woods navigation that will enable you to learn more about the park.

Once you park your travel trailer at Barren River Lake State Park, you can head out to one of four nature trails dotted around the park. For those that love to view wildlife, there is a dedicated Nature Trail, where you can spot amazing wildlife. Peter's Creek Trail is a popular route for those that love old farm remnants, while the Paved Bike and Hike Trail is an easy-to-moderate two-mile trail, where you can hike a few strenuous hills, enjoy spectacular golf course views, and take in the wildflowers. Barren River Lake State Park is a perfect RV destination no matter what time you visit.

Transportation

Driving

Barren River Lake State Park is easy to access by RV or car, since it is located just five miles from Lucas, KY, off of US 31E South. Local roads will take you anywhere you want to go within the park from the Lodge and Golf Course to the campgrounds and trails. There are no restrictions for RVs or trailers within the park so you will be able to get around easily, whether you are in your RV or another vehicle.

Parking

There are numerous options for parking trailers and RVs, with three large lots throughout the park. You'll be able to find spots at the Golf Course, Lodge, and Marina. Of course, if you are staying overnight you may park at the campground.

Reservations camping

Barren River Lake State Park Campground

Barren River Lake State Park features 99 pet-friendly campsites available for tents and RVs from April through October. The campsites are divided between Standard Electric and Tent. These campsites provide access to electricity, water, and sewer. Amenities at this campground include showers, restrooms, and a dump station and each site has a paved pad, picnic table, and fire pit. You'll be close to the nature trails and a playground. There is no limit on the length of stay. A two-night minimum weekend stay is required during peak weekends.

In-Season

Hiking

You'll want to pack great hiking boots in the campervan since there are four hiking trails to choose from at Barren River Lake State Park that vary in difficulty. If you are looking for an easy stroll or hike, check out Lena Madesin Trail. This is a half-mile looped, interpretive nature trail that is self-guided. Access to this trail is only available to those who rent the picnic area. For a more difficult trail, trek out on the nearly three-mile Paved Bike and Hike Trail, which will have you enduring a few strenuous hills, and providing excellent views of the golf course, bridges, and streams. The hiking trails are pet-friendly.

Biking

Barren River Lake State Park is an excellent place to bring your bike and head out onto the Paved Bike and Hike Trail. Once you park your RV you can cycle down this two-and-a-half-mile looped trail with an asphalt surface and great for a short bike ride. You will be rewarded with spectacular views of streams, bridges, and the golf course.

Swimming

If you are an avid swimmer or just wish to relax by the shoreline, you will love the opportunity to take a dip in Barren River Lake at Barren River Lake State Park. This state park features over 140 miles of shoreline for your relaxation pleasure.

Off-Season

Birding

Barren River Lake State Park is home to numerous unique species of birds, so you will want to make sure you pack your binoculars in your RV. Some of the many birds you may see include Bald Eagles, flycatchers, warblers, and Sandhill Cranes. Thrushes are spotted regularly on the trails. Other areas for birding include Barren River Lake and waterways scattered throughout the park. Make sure you don't miss a trek along Connell Nature Trail, which offers great opportunities to spot all types of birds.

Orienteering

Barren River Lake State Park features a woods navigation activity where you use a map to complete a course. This opportunity may be completed as a group or individually. There are two permanent courses, a less than a mile-long beginner's course with nine checkpoints and an intermediate course that covers a little over two miles offering 16 checkpoints. Both courses at Barren River Lake State Park are set in the woods.

Picnicking

If you have a large gathering planned or family and friends visiting during your RV adventure, Barren River Lake State Park offers two picnic areas near the marina with picnic tables and grills. Seven shelters are available for rental as well and each include various amenities such as restrooms, a playground, grills, a stage, tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts. When you rent the picnic area you will also have direct access to the half-mile Lena Madesin Trail. This interpretive nature trail is self-guided and easy-moderate difficulty.
