Introduction

Sitting on the shores of Charlie Lake is Beatton Provincial Park, a year-round recreational destination for RV campers. Located 13 km (8 miles) northwest of Fort St. John, on the 244 road, off Highway 97, this 3.2 sq. km (1.2 sq. mile) provincial park offers wonderful recreational activities for RV campers including hiking and biking, fishing for walleye and northern pike, canoeing and kayaking, wildlife viewing and nature observation, and swimming. The park offers excellent winter recreation opportunities too including cross-country skiing along more than 15 km (9 miles) of groomed trails, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and tobogganing. The cross-country ski trails are designed for beginner, intermediate and advancing skiing. Beatton Provincial Park is a must-visit RV camping destination.

Beatton Provincial Park features 39 RV campsites as well as facilities and amenities such as water taps, restrooms, garbage stations, firewood, wheelchair accessible areas, horseshoes, change houses, day use area, playground, picnic centers, swimming beach, boat launch, Information Center, hiking trails, and parking lots. While most of the campsites in the campground are available by reservation, some are available on first-come first-served basis only.

Transportation

Driving

Located 13 km (8 miles) northwest of Fort St. John, on the 244 road, off Highway 97, Beatton Provincial Park is easily accessible by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles. Paved roads within the park connect various areas including the campground and the day use area, hence making navigation within the park easy. Off-Road Vehicles such as ATVs, off-road motorcycles, snowmobiles and side-by-sides are not allowed in the park.

Parking

There are four parking areas available for RV campers to park their RVs, trailers, and cars in Beatton Provincial Park. The large main parking lot is located by the campground, while two parking lots are at the day use area. One parking lot is located at the park entrance. RV campers can also park their rigs at their respective campsites in the park. Overnight parking is available.

Public Transportation

There are no direct public transportation services to Beatton Provincial Park.

Reservations camping

Beatton Campground

Beatton Campground in Beatton Provincial Park features 39 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. No RV hookups are available in the campground. RV length limit in the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however vacationers with larger rigs can call ahead to find out if there is space available. Amenities available in Beatton Campground include water taps, restrooms, garbage stations, firewood, wheelchair accessible areas, Information Center, access to trailheads and waterfront. Playground and horseshoe pits are also available near the campground. Maximum stay in the campground is 14 days.

27 campsites in the campground are reservable, while 12 campsites are available on first-come first-served basis.

Off-Season

Swimming

The swimming beach available in Beatton Provincial Park is open to RV campers who wish to take a dip in Charlie Lake and enjoy swimming. There is a marked swimming area in the beach and no lifeguards are available. Change houses are also available by the beach.

Flora and Fauna

Beatton Provincial Park is well decorated with resplendent flora which make the park a beauty to behold. Flowers, trees, and shrubs are abundant in the park and form part of the natural heritage of the park. Moreover, deer and moose are often found in the park.

Winter Recreation

Winter is a wonderful time to visit Beatton Provincial Park as the park offers several opportunities for RV campers including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and tobogganing. More than 15 km (9 miles) of groomed cross-country ski trails are available for skiers of all experience levels, as well as mountain bikers. A toboggan hill exists in the park just around the entrance, while an extensive snowshoe trail is also designated in the park. Ice fishing enthusiasts too enjoy ice fishing in Charlie Lake.

Water Activities

Charlie Lake offers abundant opportunities for RV campers to enjoy various water activities in Beatton Provincial Park. Canoeing and kayaking are popular activities on the lake and RV campers always bring their canoes and kayaks since there are no rentals at the park. Moreover, waterskiing and windsurfing opportunities are available for RV campers and enthusiasts on Charlie Lake.

Fishing

Charlie Lake in Beatton Provincial Park offers RV campers the opportunity to test their angling skills and catch fish while enjoying their vacation. A fish cleaning station is even available for use in the park after campers have successfully caught fish in the lake. Walleye and northern pike are the most common fish species to catch in the lake. All campers who wish to fish in Beatton Provincial Park must possess an appropriate fishing licence.

Hiking/Biking

Over 15 km (9 miles) of hiking trails are available throughout Beatton Provincial Park for RV campers to enjoy while on vacation. The trails take hikers along the shores of Charlie Lake into the woods and along various scenic spots that offer beautiful views of the features in the park. Trail maps are posted at trailheads and major junctions along the trails to guide hikers on their adventure on foot through the park. Cycling is also allowed in Beatton Provincial Park along the roadways, and RV campers who wish to ride their bicycles are required to have their bicycle helmets.
