Francis E. Walter Dam is located just south of Scranton via Interstate 476. If you're coming from the city, you can take Highway 611 out of Philadelphia to get to Francis E. Walter Dam. It is located in White Haven, Pennsylvania, and is easy to access. The roads surrounding the dam are all paved and kept up with. They are fairly straight, without harsh curves, perfect for RVs and large vehicles.
It may be beneficial to know that the watershed above the dam has been glaciated, which resulted in scoured summits and valley walls. Francis E. Walter Dam is located off of Walter Dam Road, which can easily be accessed from interstate 476 or interstate 80 in eastern Pennsylvania.
It's important to look for road closures and traffic before heading out the door. Though the area has a fairly temperate climate, it still does experience winter. Reservations camping

Lehigh Gorge Campground

For RVs and trailers, Lehigh Gorge Campground provides a full-service camping experience. Each site features a stone base along with a fire ring and picnic table. Pets are allowed for RV and trailer campers only and must be kept on a leash at all times. There are full hookups for electricity, water, and sewer. Conveniently, there is Wi-Fi available for all campers. Tent sites are also available and come with a picnic table and firing as well. There are over 150 campsites in total at this campground.
All campsites are near showers and bathrooms. Lehigh Gorge Campground encourages its visitors to keep trash, food, and toiletries at least 20 feet away from where you're sleeping for your own safety. This is due to the increased bear population in the area. Lehigh Gorge campgrounds has several play areas as well as a pool, a volleyball court, and a pavilion. There is also a game room, laundry room, and an on-site store where you can purchase firewood and other necessities.

In-Season

Cliff Jumping

If you're looking for a thrill, consider cliff jumping off of one of the naturally made cliffs above the dam and reservoir. This is not only a fun activity, but it can cool you off during the warm summer months. There is no swimming in the reservoir, so it's important to get out of the water quickly after you dive in, for your own safety.

The cliffs come out a variety of different heights, so you can jump from two feet above the water, five feet above the water, ten feet above the water and higher. It's important to note that when you are cliff jumping, you are doing so at your own risk.

Fishing

Another relaxing water activity you can do at Francis E. Walter Dam is fishing. Fishing is a great way to spend an afternoon with friends or family. It gets you out in nature and can even teach you new skills. Not only can you fish in the reservoir but you can also fish in Lehigh River.

It's important to know that motorboats are limited to 10 hp to preserve the area. The most commonly caught fish are trout and smallmouth bass. Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stock the river with brown and rainbow trout as well.

Picnicking

Whether you're near the dam or a local campsite, there is plenty of areas to enjoy a picnic. If you're at Lehigh Campground you'll have access to picnic tables, grills, and fire rings. You can enjoy corn on the cob grilled over charcoal or have a delicious s'more handmade over an open fire.

Wherever you eat, it's important to clean up after yourself. This not only keeps the area clean and preserved but it also keeps everyone safe from attracting bears and other dangerous wildlife.
