Nestled within the state of Kentucky is 1500 acre Grayson Lake, a man-made body of water constructed as a flood control project for the Little Sandy River. The lake straddles Carter and Elliot counties and is extremely picturesque, a strong selling feature for families looking for a setting that is renowned for both its beauty and its charm.
The landscape is dotted with canyons of soft rock formations and incredibly sandy coastline. In years gone by, the area was a preferred camping locale for Native American groups such as the Shawnee and Cherokees.
Grayson Lake's property houses several boat ramps to provide easy accessibility to the water for watercraft. The coast consists of 74 miles of diverse terrain which descends into valleys and rises to sandy peaks.
Only a few miles from the grounds of Grayson Lake State Park is a public marina. Here, families can enjoy many different watersports activities, including boating, swimming, waterskiing, fishing, and more. Grayson Lake is situated quite close to many of the area's most beloved attractions include the Hidden Cove Golf Course, an 18 hole golfing facility which was rated the #4 course in Golf Digest's 2005 issue. Transportation

Driving

The route to Grayson Lake is well-marked and proceeds along highways and backcountry roads of two-lane construction. Each of the roads has been carefully maintained and is easy to follow. Traffic moves fluidly even during times of delays due to road work.

Occasionally, wildlife traverses the road. Exercise caution when driving to avoid an accident.

Parking

Parking is available at the entrance to Grayson Lake State Park via a provided lot. The campground can accommodate both RV's and trailers.

Public Transportation

There is no public transportation to Grayson Lake.

Reservations camping

Grayson Lake State Park

Grayson Lake State Park offers 71 campsites for RV and tent campers on a first come, first served basis. Some of the campsites have power hookups while others are designed for more primitive style camping.

There is a waste disposal station on site, and there are also restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. There is a small store which offers snacks, drinks, ice, and firewood for sale. Pay telephones are also available on the grounds.

Camping is only permitted from April 1st through November 31st yearly. Generator use is allowed, and leashed dogs are welcome.

In-Season

Swimming

Swimming is a favorite hobby of visitors to Grayson Lake. With over 1512 acres of coastline to explore at your leisure, you can easily find your own private section of beach for you and your family to enjoy.

Take the plunge into the crisp lake waters and float your cares away or practice perfecting your breaststroke. After your swimming fun, you can recline in the sand and work on your suntan, build a sandcastle, or take in the latest bestseller.

Water recreation

With four boat ramps to choose from and a nearby public marina, there are lots of places for you to launch your boat into the water at Grayson Lake. The marina is near to several places where you can rent watersports equipment including sailboats, powerboats, waterskis, kayaks, canoes, and more.
Launch your boat out directly from the shore, from the marina, or one of the public ramps, and get ready to enjoy a water adventure you'll not soon forget. Fishing is popular here, so bring along your tackle box and some bait and try your hand at catching your supper.

Picnicking

Picnicking is a fan favorite activity at Grayson Lake. You can relax on a blanket along the beach or meander the grounds in search of the perfect picnic table; either spot will be the ideal backdrop against which you can enjoy your packed lunch from home.

Pack a cooler full of all of your picnic essentials including bottled water, soft drinks, a lunch, and some additional treats. Dogs may join you on your picnic, but in accordance with state laws, must remain on a leash at all times.

Off-Season

Fishing

Even when the temperatures start to dip, the fishing is still fine at Grayson Lake. Fish from the shore or from the comfort of your boat; either way, you'll be sure to have a great time.

Some of the most commonly seen fish in the waters of Grayson Lake include bass, crappie, bluegill, trout, and catfish.

Dress for cooler temps and bring along a thermos full of hot chocolate or coffee to ward off any chill.

Snacks and drinks are always a great idea.

Check with local officials to see if a fishing license is required for angling at Grayson Lake.

Hiking

Grayson Lake's 1,512 acres of property offers many hiking trails for families to explore. The terrain is extremely diverse, with plunging canyon depths and steep inclines, so you will definitely need good hiking shoes that can withstand the pressure of a challenging outdoor landscape.
The trails vary in length and intensity, allowing you to choose the right one for each member of your team. Each of them is very well-marked.
Dress in layers to remain warm and carry drinking water in case of thirst.
